The St. Lawrence men's tennis team finished the 2016-17 season with a commanding 8-1 win over Union on Friday night, with seniors
Marco Amendola and
Elliot Solandt leading the way with a pair of wins.
The duo combined for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles over Ian Bank and Zach Kaplan, while fellows senior
Kevin Frommer paired with
Eric Tecce for another 8-5 at No. 2. In the third spot,
Alec Roslin and
Spencer Whitmire edged David Brown and Del Schunk 9-8 with a 7-5 win in the tiebreak to help the Saints to a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
St. Lawrence won five of the six singles matches, including two that required a tiebreak and one in three sets.
Amendola beat David Bond at No. 3 6-3 in the first set and 7-6 in the second behind a 7-2 advantage in the tiebreak.
Alec Roslin also played to a tiebreak in the fourth spot, edging Brown 7-6 (7-4) and 7-5 in straight sets.
Tecce and Solandt also won in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 5, respectively, with Tecce beating Kaplan 6-3, 6-4 and Solandt rolling past Justin Gold 6-2, 6-3.
The final win of the day came from Whitmire at No. 6 as he outlasted Max McGeown in three sets. Whitmire won the first 6-1 and after McGeown answered with a 6-3 win in the second to force the deciding set, Whitmire rebounded with a 7-5 victory to seal the win.
The Saints finished the season with a 5-13 overall record and a 3-4 mark against Liberty League opponents in 2016-17. Union also concluded its season on Friday night and posted a 5-13 overall record with a 1-6 record against conference opponents. Â
