Hayton Wins Ken Dryden Award, Joins Bayreuther on All-ECAC Hockey First Team

After record-breaking seasons for both, junior Kyle Hayton earned the 2016-2017 ECAC Hockey Ken Dryden Goaltender of the Year award, while he and senior defenseman Gavin Bayreuther each garnered First Team All-ECAC Hockey honors. ECAC Hockey announced its postseason awards prior to the start of the first semifinal on Friday afternoon in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Hayton becomes the first netminder since former Saints' All-America Eric Heffler in 1999 to win the Ken Dryden Award. Additionally, this is the second All-ECAC Hockey honor for the junior goaltender and the third for Bayreuther, who was also named to the first team following the 2015-16 season.

Hayton, who was named the ECAC Hockey Media Association goalie of the year on Thursday, was selected by conference coaches as the top goaltender this season. With a 12-6-4 mark through the regular season, the Denver, Colo. native had a league-best .939 save percentage and four shutouts and was second among his counterparts in goals against average (1.90) and total saves (636).  He was a three-time ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week selection during the regular season and was both the ECAC Hockey and HCA National Play of the Month for November after helping St. Lawrence to a 5-0-3 record.

Overall he made 36 appearances, tied his own record with five shutouts and finished with a .929 save percentage, 2.28 goals against average and 16-12-7 record.

Bayreuther, who signed a contract with the Dallas Stars organization earlier this week, finished as the Saints leading scorer for the second consecutive year with eight goals and 21 assists for 29 points, including 15 points in conference games. He graduates as the St. Lawrence program leader in goals by a defenseman with 35 while also adding 76 assists for 111 points.

The Canaan, N.H. native was third in scoring among ECAC Hockey defensemen and tied for 12th in Division I, even after missing seven games due to injury this season. He led conference blueliners with 104 shots on goal, recorded nine power play points, a short-handed goal and finished the season at a +9.

He was the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week once this season and is a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award. Both Bayreuther and Hayton were among the early hopefuls for the Hobey Baker Award.
