Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Andrew Jarrett Scores the Overtime Winner against RPI

Junior Andrew Jarrett scored his second goal of the game 1:05 into overtime leading the St. Lawrence University Men's Lacrosse team, ranked No. 4 in the country, to an 8-7 victory over RPI Saturday afternoon in ECAV Stadium in Troy.

St. Lawrence (14-1 overall, 5-1 Liberty League) clinched second place in the final Liberty League standings with one game remaining and will host a League Tournament semifinal game on North Country Field at Hall-Leet Stadium Friday, May 8. The Saints, ranked No. 4 in the latest USILA/Nike national poll, will host the third place team RPI in that semifinal contest.

"We came into the game knowing they (RPI) had a great defense," said Head Coach Mike Mahoney. "We knew we had to be patient on offense and if we kept pushing the shots would eventually fall."

RPI (10-3, 4-3e) opened the scoring in the back-and-forth game in the first three minutes of the contest before St. Lawrence came back for a pair of goals in a span of less than a minute to take a 2-1 lead.

Brett McCormack fired a bounce shot past the RPI goalie to open the scoring and Connor Brimley moved in from the right side of the offensive zone and scored between the goalie's legs as the Saints went ahead.

The Engineers opened the second quarter with a goal to tie the game 1:06 into the period and Charlie Duprey scored for the Saints less than five minutes later for a 3-2 Saints lead.

RPI scored two more goals before the end of the first half to take a 4-3 lead into the break.

Jarrett scored his first goal of the game with just 1:02 left in the third quarter for the only goal of the period and the teams headed into the final quarter tied at 4-4.

In the fourth quarter, RPI forged ahead early in the period before Duprey scored his second of the game as he muscled his way in front of the goal and fired a shot into the top corner to tie the game at 5-5.

RPI regained the lead at the 8:13 mark in the period scoring just two seconds after the Saints had successfully killed a man-up opportunity.

Jamie DeNicola cut to the goal and took a pass from Jeremy Vautour scoring with a shot just inside the post knotting the game at 6-6 with 1:31 left to play and Vautour scored his only goal of the game less than 40 seconds later breaking free across the top of the zone to give the Saints a 7-6 lead with only 52 seconds left.

RPI scored with just 2.6 seconds left on the clock to force the overtime period. Ryan Fisher had made a leg save on a shot with 25 seconds left but the Engineers maintained possession and tied the game on the last second shot.

After RPI won the face off to start overtime, the Saints defense forced a bad pass turnover and took over possession in the RPI zone. The Saints moved the ball around the zone and Jarrett took possession from the top of the zone and moved to his left down the side of the offensive formation a fired a shot into the lower corner of the goal for the game-winning goal.

"It was a great game between to very good teams," said Mahoney. "When you look at the NCAA Regional rankings and see the No. 3 (St. Lawrence) and No. 4 (RPI) teams against each other, you knew it was going to be a great game. It says a lot about the strength of the Liberty League."

Jarrett, Vautour and Duprey led the Saints with two points each on the day while Caleb Kane picked up a team-leading seven ground balls and shared the team lead with Jack Roberts with two caused turnovers each. Alec Dietsch won 11 face offs and also had four ground balls as did Steel White.
