Strong Finish Leads Men’s Lacrosse Past Clarkson

Jeremy Vautour scored four goals and Conor Healey added three goals leading the St. Lawrence University Men's Lacrosse team, ranked No. 5 in the USILA/Nike National Poll, to a 16-8 victory over Clarkson University Wednesday night on Hantz Turf Field in Potsdam.

Clarkson (2-9 Overall, 0-4 Liberty League) started strong scoring the first two goals of the game to take an early lead. The Saints (11-1, 3-1) responded with two goals to tie the score as AJ Schmidt and Brett McCormack each scored before Vautour scored his first with a man-up goal late in the opening quarter to give St. Lawrence a 3-2 lead.

Early in the second quarter, the Knights struck again to tie the game at 3-3 with only 32 seconds elapsed in the period.

After more than 10 minutes of scoreless play, the Saints took control with three straight goals to end the half as Jamie Kuppel, Jamie DeNicola and Vautour each scored to give St. Lawrence a 6-3 advantage at the end of the first half.

Healey scored his first goal to start the second half with a goal 26 seconds into the third quarter but Clarkson battled back with a pair of goals, including a man-up goal to cut the lead to 7-5 with 8:11 left in the quarter.

Conner Brimley scored a quick goal off transition that sparked another four-goal run for the Saints. DeNicola, Austin Nadeau and Vautour added goals as the Saints took an 11-5 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Clarkson scored twice in a span of less than a minute to trim the lead to 11-7 but St. Lawrence put the game away with five consecutive goals as McCormack and Healey scored to start the streak.

The third goal of the run featured goalie Ryan Fisher as he made the save on the defensive end, picked up the ground ball and raced all the way up the field before firing a shot past the Clarkson goalie for the 14-7 lead.

Healey and Vautour added goals to cap the run and Clarkson added a late man-up goal with a two-man advantage to end the game.

McCormack and DeNicola added two goals each to the team-leading totals for Vautour and Healey while Alec Dietsch picked up a pair of assists and led the Saints with eight ground balls winning nine face off on the night. Fellow face off specialist Joseph Stacy won seven of his 10 face off attempts as well.

Fisher played just less than 58 minutes and recorded his 11th win making five saves and also picked up three ground balls.

The Saints were a perfect 2-for-2 on man-up opportunities and limited Clarkson to just two goals in nine opportunities.

The Saints return home Saturday to face Vassar College in a Liberty League matchup at Noon on North Country Field at Hall-Leet Stadium.
