Route 11 Rivalry: Friday Edition

No. 19 St. Lawrence will finish its first semester schedule with a single game against Clarkson on Friday, Dec. 9 in the first of two regular season meetings between the Route 11 Rivals. 

Both St. Lawrence and Clarkson - who is receiving votes in this week's USCHO.com poll - come into Friday's game with nine wins on the season. The Saints are 9-5-4 overall (6-1-3 in their last 10) with a 6-1-2 mark against conference teams, while the Golden Knights are 9-6-3 (6-2-2 in their last 10) and 5-2-1 in ECAC Hockey contests. 

This marks the first team Saints' head coach Mark Morris will face his former team since taking over the St. Lawrence program in May. He spent 13 seasons with Clarkson and coached the Golden Knights to 306 wins before leaving the program in 2002.

The St. Lawrence men's hockey team, in conjunction with the Canton Christmas Bureau of the Church and Community Workers, is putting a Check on Hunger in the North Country. They invite ALL fans to participate in the Annual Holiday Food Drive during the Clarkson game on Friday, Dec. 9. Fans participating are asked to bring non-perishable food staples such as canned tuna, vegetables, soups, peanut butter and pasta.

In addition, all proceeds from the 50/50 raffle will go directly to the Church and Community Workers holiday food bank. Whether you cheer for the Knights or the Saints, let's be sure to support this most worthy North Country effort! 

Saints in the Standings
St. Lawrence dropped out of first after the loss to Harvard on Friday, but a Union win over Quinnipiac paired with the Saints' win over Dartmouth put them back on top of ECAC Hockey with one weekend remaining in the first semester. St. Lawrence has 14 points, while Union and Quinnipiac are tied for second with 13 points. 

Moving Up the Ranks 
• With three assists against Dartmouth, Gavin Bayreuther moved into sole possession of third place on the all-time list for points by a defenseman with 104.  
• One more ties him with George Hughes '13 (105). Daniel Laperriere '92 leads St. Lawrence D-men in scoring with 128 career points on 22 goals and 106 assists. 

Hayton vs. Clarkson
• Through just two seasons, Kyle Hayton has a 5-2-1 record against Clarkson, including two shutouts and two wins in overtime. 
• The Saints have outscored the Golden Knights 19-12 in those eight games with Hayton between the pipes. 

Conference-Only Numbers
Mike Marnell is tied for third among ECAC Hockey forwards in points in conference games with 11 on eight goals and three assists. He and Union's Mike Vecchione lead the league in goals in conference games.
Joe Sullivan is tied with Vecchione for a league-best +13 rating among league forwards.
Kyle Hayton leads the league's goaltenders with a .955 save percentage, 1.31 goals against average, 255 saves and 548:37 minutes played in league games so far this season.
Gavin Bayreuther leads ECAC Hockey blueliners with 10 points in conference games on two goals and eight assists. He is second in the league in +/-, playing at a +8.
Nolan Gluchowski is tied for fourth in scoring by defensemen with seven points on one goal and six assists. 

Saints of November
• The Saints were 5-0-3 overall in the month of November with a 5-0-2 record in conference games, helping them to first place in the ECAC Hockey standings. 
Kyle Hayton who was the goalie of record in all those games, was both the ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Month and the HCA National Player of the Month.
• Both Kyle Hayton and Gavin Bayreuther had record-breaking performances for St. Lawrence in November. Hayton became the program leader in career shutouts, breaking Bill Sloan's 60-year old record (9) with a 2-0 win over Quinnipiac. Bayreuther became the all-time leader in goals by a defensemen, breaking Brian McColgan's 28-year-old record (31) with his 32nd goal against RPI in Nov. 12. 
• The Saints were one of two ECAC Hockey teams to compete in the second annual Friendship Four Tournament in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Nov. 25-26; Quinnipiac being the other. The Saints and Bobcats skated to a scoreless tie in the opening game, though Quinnipiac advanced to the championship with a win in the shootout round. The following day, St. Lawrence tied UMass - coached by former Saints' head coach Greg Carvel - 2-2, before edging the Minutemen 2-1 in a shootout to clinch third place. 

About the Golden Knights 
• Like the Saints, Clarkson is coming off a series split with Dartmouth and Harvard last weekend. They beat Dartmouth 4-2 on Friday before falling 7-3 to Harvard on Saturday. 
• Clarkson is 6-2-2 in their last 10 games, including a pair of wins over nationally-ranked opponents: 3-1 over Union on Nov. 12 and 2-0 against Notre Dame on Nov. 26 to win the Shillelagh Tournament. 
• Clarkson has four draft-picks on its roster: Troy Josephs (PIT), James de Haas (DET), Kelly Summer (OTT) and Terrance Amorosa (PHI). 
• Senior Jordan Boucher leads Clarkson in scoring with seven goals, 10 assists and 17 points. He is tied with freshman Devin Brosseau for the team-lead in assists. Brosseau is second in overall scoring (5-10-15).
• Brosseau is 14th among Division I rookies in points per game (.88) 
• Troy Josephs has a team-high eight goals, including three game winners. 
• All three Clarkson netminders have started at least one game this season, but freshman Jake Kielly leads the way with 16 appearances and 950:15 minutes played. 
• Kielly is 4-1-1 in conference games with a 2.47 GAA and .920 save percentage. 
• Clarkson enters the weekend in fourth place in the ECAC Hockey standings with 11 points. 
• Clarkson is 5th in Division I in combined special teams (55.6%): 36th in power play percentage (16.9%) and 19th in penalty kill (84.7%).

The Last Time Out
• The Saints won a best-of-three ECAC Hockey Quarterfinal series against Clarkson last March with back-to-back 3-2 overtime wins to advance to Lake Placid. 
• Former Saints captain Brian Ward scored the OT winner in first game, while current assistant captain Gavin Bayreuther notched the series-clinching winner in double overtime in the second game. 
• It was the third time the Saints had ousted Clarkson in a home playoff series, though it was the first that didn't require a third game. 
Kyle Hayton made a combined 90 saves in the series, with 40 in the first game and 50 in the second. 
Drew Smolcynski had three assists in the series, while Jacob Pritchard had a goal in each game. Nolan Gluchowski and Alexander Dahl recorded the other goals for St. Lawrence.
• Perry D'Arrisso and Nic Pierog netted goals in the first game for Clarkson, while Jeff DiNallo and Kevin Tansey helped the Golden Knights erase an early two-goal deficit and force OT in game two. 
• Greg Lewis made a combined 70 saves for Clarkson in the series.

The "Madhouse on Miner"
After last weekend's split, St. Lawrence is 5-1-0 in ECAC Hockey games in Appleton Arena this season. Additionally, the Saints are 7-2-1 overall in their own barn so far this season and have outscored opponents 39-19 in those games. 

Away From Appleton
With a pair of ties in Belfast, Northern Ireland in the Friendship Four Tournament, the Saints are 0-0-2 in neutral site games. On the road, St. Lawrence is 2-3-1 overall with a 1-0-1 mark against conference opponents after a tie at Union and a win at RPI in November. The Saints are currently being outscored on the road, 21-18. 

Up Next
The Saints will return to action after the New Year with a midweek game at the University of Vermont on Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. in Burlington, Vt. The game against the Catamounts kicks off a seven game road trip for the Saints, as they don't play at Appleton again until Jan. 27-28 when they host RPI and Union.
