Rensselaer's Jacqui Richard floated a shot into the far upper 90 with 45 seconds remaining in the first overtime to help the Engineers to a 1-0 win over the St. Lawrence women's soccer team on Sandy MacAllaster field on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Saints are now 7-3-3 overall and 2-3-1 in Liberty League matches, with two weekends remaining. RPI improve to 11-3-0 and 3-2-0 in conference play with the overtime victory.
"I'm very proud of our performance today, just disappointed with the result," head coach
Franco Bari said. "We attacked very well, our defending was solid and while it wasn't easy coming off of an overtime game, the team's perseverance was strong. Playing two back-to-back overtimes is never easy but we played with fight."
The Saints outshot the Engineers 16-9 overall and had a number of opportunities to hit a streaking winger in transition, but the ball got hung up in the wind and fell short of the target, sending the visitor's the other way. Shots on goal were even at five apiece.
Hannah Merriam led St. Lawrence with four shots;
Emily Wade and
Katie Stames has three each.
Jackie Sovie made four saves for St. Lawrence, while RPI's Joey Lyons stopped all five shots she faced.
The Saints will host RIT next Saturday, Oct. 22 at 3 p.m. in their final regular season home game of 2016 and will celebrate seniors
Lindsay Geier and
Amy Reunert.
