Feb. 3: A pair of second period goals and a power-play tally helped the No. 10 Clarkson women's hockey team past No. 8/9 St. Lawrence, 3-1, at Appleton Arena on Tuesday night. The loss halts the Saints' unbeaten streak at eight games and drops them to fifth place in the ECAC standings.
The Knights (17-8-3; 11-3-2 ECAC) outshot the Saints (16-9-3; 10-4-2 ECAC) in the first period 14-9, but the Saints applied pressure to the visitors in the following two periods; finishing with a 43-26 advantage in shots for the game. Shea Tiley made a number of great saves down the stretch for Clarkson.
"Clarkson played a very good road game," Head Coach
Chris Wells said. "Once they got the first one it was very tough to get any quality shots or opportunities. The D did a fantastic job putting sticks in lanes to deflect pucks and breakup plays.
We certainly made it exciting in the third," he added, "but Tiley was solid all night and in control of anything we put on the net."
St. Lawrence pulled senior netminder
Carmen MacDonald for the extra attacker with just over eight minutes remaining in the final frame and controlled much of the play within their offensive zone. Sophomore
Kirsten Padalis scored her second goal in as many games  during that time with her team a man up.
After a scoreless first period in which the Saints successfully killed two penalties, Clarkson's Olivia Howe got her team on the board with a breakaway goal off a turnover at the 6:28 mark. She moved in on senior netminder
Carmen MacDonald and faked to the left post before cutting across the crease and finishing on the backhand.
Cayley Mercer extended the Golden Knights lead to 2-0 when she roofed a shot over the shoulder of MacDonald from the bottom of the left circle with Howe and Christine Lambert assisting.
The third Clarkson goal was a power-play tally at the 7:08 mark of the third period by Genevieve Bannon off a feed from Lambert and Erin Ambrose.
"They had three beauty goals by Howe, Mercer and Bannon and some great efforts; most recognizable was the sprint race for the puck by Howe to negate the icing and take some momentum away from us," Wells added.
With Clarkson leading 3-0, Padalis finally cashed in with 2:29 remaining in regulation. After taking a pass from classmate
Brooke Webster, Padalis stepped into a slapshot just inside the left blue line that sailed through traffic and into the back of the net to spoil Tiley's shutout bid.
The Saints will now turn their attention to Union and RPI, as they hit the road for a pair of ECAC Hockey matchups with the Capitol District teams.Â
