Saints Sweep Liberty League Squash Awards

Amr Khalifa is Liberty League Player of the Year for the 2nd straight year
Mar. 18: St. Lawrence University's men's squash team swept the 2014 awards in Liberty League squash, as Amr Khalifa was named Player of the Year, Moustafa Bayoumy was the league Rookie of the Year and Chris Abplanalp, Pamela Larromana, Greg Kreitzer and volunteer assistant John Bursnall were named Coaching Staff of the Year.

It is the first time since the start of Liberty League squash that the Saints have swept the major awards. SLU won the Liberty League squash championship in the fall, posted its highest ranking in program history at fourth and finished fifth in the team nationals.

Khalifa, who was both Player and Rookie of the Year as a freshman, repeated as Player of the Year after going 10-2 as a sophomore and making the finals of the Potter Cup in the individual nationals. Both of his losses came to national champion Ali Faraq of Harvard. The Saint sophomore has a two-year record of 25-2. He was also a unanimous first team all league choice.

Joining Khalifa on the first team all star squad as a unanimous choice was Rookie of the Year Bayoumy, who won 18 consecutive matches before losing to Faraq in the individual nationals semifinals. He went 18-1 for the season, 7-0 at one and 8-0 at two.

Abplanalp was named Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career after leading his Saints to a 13-4 overall mark and its best finishes in program history. The Saints also had a record eight players qualify for individual nationals.

Joining Khalifa and Bayoumy on the Liberty League all star squad were junior Ibriham Khan, also a unanimous choice, and senior Vir Seth. Khan went 9-10 overall for the Saints and was 7-2 in the one and two spots while Seth was 8-7 including 6-0 playing in the three spot. Junior Chris Fernandez, 16-4 playing primarily six through eighth, was a honorable mention selection.
