Cady Leads Saints Past Bates 68-59

Allison Cady '15 led St. Lawrence with 17 points against Bates.
Box Score Jan. 4: St. Lawrence University junior Allison Cady scored a season-high 17 points on Saturday night, leading the Saints women's basketball team past Bates College by the score of 68-59 at the Williams Tournament in Williamstown, MA.

The Saints improve to 3-4 on the season, while the Bobcats slip to 6-5.  Junior Kara McDuffee added a double-double for St. Lawrence with 15 points and 11 boards, while senior Kelly Legg managed 10 points and eight rebounds.  Bates was led offensively by Meredith Kelly's game-high 21 points.

"I thought it was a nice, solid first game following the holiday break," said St. Lawrence head coach Dan Roiger.  "Bates played well, but we seemed to always have an answer.  It was a good team effort where a lot of players made big plays."

St. Lawrence never trailed in the non-conference contest, as they shot 47% from the floor (25-of-53) and out-rebounded Bates 40-31.  The Scarlet and Brown also held a sizable lead (32-18) in points in the paint.

The Saints led by eight at the break, 33-25, but saw the Bobcats rally behind Chelsea Nason and Kelly.  The duo pulled Bates within four, and Allie Coppola's lay-up with 16:53 to play made it a two-point game, 38-36 and forced a timeout from Coach Roiger.

Fresh out of the timeout, though, Cady would drill a three pointer to swing the momentum back in St. Lawrence's favor.  She would hit another three, while McDuffee added a pair of buckets to spurt an 11-1 run that gave the Saints firm control of the game up 49-37.  Though Bates would pull to within four several times and within two at 51-49, Cady seemingly always had a response to keep St. Lawrence ahead.

Bates had chances down the stretch to close the gap, but scored only one field goal in the final 5:15 of regulation.  The scoring struggles allowed St. Lawrence to pull away, as Legg, McDuffee and Lauren Quattrocchi all added points in the closing minutes to secure the 68-59 win.

The Saints will take on the hosting Ephs of Williams College tomorrow at 3:00pm to conclude the tournament, while Bates takes on RPI at 1:00pm.
