First-year goalkeeper Stella Gizzi made a career-high nine saves, but two goals in the first quarter powered the No. 10 Hamilton Continentals to a 2-0 win over the St. Lawrence University field hockey team on Wednesday evening in Canton, N.Y.

Two goals from the Continentals in the first quarter proved to be the difference in this afternoon's matchup.

Hamilton's Isabelle Nahon scored first with a long shot from the left corner putting the Continentals up 1-0, just 5:04 into the first frame.

Just about three minutes later on a penalty corner, Brighton McMahon finished off scoring after beating two defenders and sending a backhanded shot to the back of the net.

St. Lawrence applied heavy pressure in the fourth quarter, putting seven shots on net, but the Continentals were able to hold onto their shutout bid.

"I thought we played a really tough game and stepped up to a major challenge against the No. 10 team in the country," said head coach Fran Grembowicz. "We made some good connections on the field and the team followed today's game plan well. We're excited to open conference play this weekend."



Gizzi made nine saves, while Kelly Janssen finished with eight for Hamilton.

Hamilton finished with a 25-16 advantage in shots, including 11-8 in shots on goal and led 9-7 in penalty corners.

SLU fell to 4-3 on the season, while Hamilton improved to 5-1 overall. 

The Saints hit the road for Liberty League play this Saturday at Skidmore. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
