Three Saints scored, but four goals in the second half powered the Skidmore Thoroughbreds to a 9-3 win over the St. Lawrence University field hockey team in the Liberty League opener on Saturday afternoon in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
Lily Gubbins,
Hannah Gubbins and
Charlotte Lehr all scored for the Scarlet and Brown, while
Skidmore rushed out to an early lead with a pair of goals from Erin Ohlenbusch and Molly Van Vranken in the first quarter, which gave the Thoroughbreds a 2-0 lead after 15 minutes.
Lily Gubbins scored her third goal of the season to split the difference, making it 2-1, with
Hannah Gubbins assisting on the play.
Skidmore scored two unanswered goals, a second from Van Vranken and one from Emma Houff, but the Saints were able to knock one more in as
Maddy Shaw assisted
Charlotte Lehr to bring the Saints within two. Skidmore's Izzy Blake gave the Thoroughbreds a three-goal lead just 11 seconds before halftime.
The back-and-forth action continued as
Hannah Gubbins scored for SLU and Colby Paul scored twice for Skidmore, sending the game to 7-3 in favor of the Thoroughbreds heading into the fourth quarter.
Skidmore tacked on two more goals for the 9-3 final in Saratoga Springs.
Stella Gizzi recorded seven saves in third quarters, while
Stella Zimmer made three saves in the fourth quarter. Lily Dreyfuss led three Thoroughbred goalkeepers with four saves.
The Thoroughbreds led 20-7 in shots on goal and held a 17-5 advantage in penalty corners.
St. Lawrence fell to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while Skidmore improved to 4-3 and 1-0.
SLU returns home to North Country Field and hosts Ithaca on Friday, October 2 at 4 p.m. for Laurentian Weekend.
