Stella Gizzi made seven saves, but No. 20 Ithaca scored three goals in the second half to top the St. Lawrence University field hockey team 3-0 on Friday afternoon at North Country Field in Canton, N.Y. on Laurentian Weekend.
Defensively,
Morgan Barnard and
Emma Rosher each recorded a defensive save for the Scarlet and Brown.
Both goalkeepers were up to the task and it was a defensive battle from the start, as the game was knotted 0-0 at the break.
Just 37 seconds into the third quarter, Ithaca scored their first of the game, as Payton Yahner sent a long ass from the right side, through traffic to a wide open Mia Woodward, who gave the Bombers a 1-0 lead.
The Bombers scored their second off a high shot from Abby Hennessy off the penalty corner at 33:19.
In similar fashion, Ithaca's third goal was also off a corner, as Elizabeth Rumble sent a low shot to the right corner for the 3-0 final.
Gizzi stopped seven shots for SLU, while Maeve Clark finished with six for Ithaca.
The Bombers led 22-21 in shots, including 12-7 in shots on goal. Ithaca also led in penalty corners, 8-3.
Ithaca improved to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in Liberty League play, while the Saints fell to 4-5 and 0-2, respectively.
St. Lawrence heads to Schenectady, N.Y. on Sunday, October 4 to take on Union at 2 p.m.
