The Saints saw six singles entries advance to the semifinals in singles play, as well as one doubles pairing, as the St. Lawrence University women's tennis team took part in Day One of the Mary Hosking Invitational on the campus of William Smith.
In the A draw of singles play,
Elisa Iuri had a first-round bye, then advanced through the quarterfinal round with an 8-1 win against Union's Ava Boncordo. Iuri advanced to the semifinal round, where she will take on a familiar opponent in
Yvette Karera. Karera's run to the match began with an 8-1 win over William Smith's Grace Magna in the Round of 16, and an 8-4 quarterfinal win over Kai Wells of RIT.
Iuri and
Yvette Karera will face off with a chance at the flight final, along with senior
Ariane Karera, who advanced to the semis on the other half of the draw.
Ariane Karera won her Round of 16 match 8-2 over RIT's Tina Dong, then defeated Noel Allen of Rochester 8-4 in the quarters to set up a semifinal match against Madeleine Sutro of Ithaca.
The Scarlet and Brown saw two more advance to the semis in the B draw in
Callie Perrin and
Ellie Fritz.
Perrin's run began with an 8-2 win over RIT's Amulya Settyvari in the Round of 16 and a very competitive 9-7 win in the quarterfinals against William Smith's Nellie Larson. She will take on Ithaca's Zuri Freeman with a trip to the final on the line.
Fritz found similar success on her side of the bracket, winning 8-2 in the opening round against Ithaca's Avery Greher, then winning 8-6 in the quarters against Rochester's Lauren Kallas to set up a matchup against Rochester's Hailey Kornbluth in the semifinals.
Sarah Oldland was the sixth singles player to reach the semifinals as she played in the C draw. The senior beat Union's Caroline Fitzsimmons 8-4 in the Round of 16 and 8-4 in the quarterfinals against Union's Violet Tran. She will line up with Rochester's Aiza Ahmed tomorrow with a ticket to the final on the line.
In the A doubles draw, the Karera's were rolling as they opened their run with an 8-2 win in the Round of 16 against the William Smith duo, Katelyn Gray and Larson. They would proceed to defeat Union's Loden Bradstreet and Madelyn Alecia 8-1 to advance to the semifinals, where they will face Rochester's Lauren Kallas and Noel Allen.
The Scarlet and Brown will look to keep their momentum rolling tomorrow on Day Two of the Mary Hosking Invitational.
