A pair of five-point games from
Jessica LaPlaca and
Cate Rathnam, plus a hat trick from
Tallis Tarbell powered the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse to a 13-10 win over RPI in conference play on Saturday afternoon on the campus of MIT in Cambridge, Mass.
With her second of five points on the day, LaPlaca recorded her 100th career point in Scarlet and Brown.Â
Tarbell scored three goals, while LaPlaca and Rathnam finished with two goals and three assists each.
Phoebe Spaeth finished with two goals and an assist, while
Jolie Osborne scored twice and
Ava O'Rourke and
Read Roy also scored once.
Eliza D'Agostino and
Ruthie Haims grabbed three ground balls, while
Winnie Downs caused three turnovers and
Keira Dodd won five draws.
LaPlaca struck first for the Scarlet and Brown, but Engineers took an early lead outscoring the Saints 4-1 in the opening frame.
A big second half put the Saints in control for the remainder of the game. Tarbell started a four-goal run for SLU to regain a 5-4 advantage with 10:36 to play. RPI added two of their own, but the Saints finished off the second quarter with goals from Rathnam and Osborne to led 7-6 at the break.
St. Lawrence shutout the Engineers in the third, increasing their lead to 11-6.
RPI was able to score four in the last quarter, but goals from Rathnam and LaPlaca allowed the Saints to complete the comeback and finish with the win.
"Our defense started strong but playing down a player cost us," said head coach
Tom Ryan. "We got some decent looks but couldn't get them to fall. We opened the flood gates for the second quarter and our offense really started clicking. We were able to stay out of the box and that made a big difference."
"We continued the momentum in the third quarter and really started to roll. It was a good team win and another step forward for this group. When we play together, we look really good and it was really fun to have so many families, alumni and friends there supporting us."
Abigail Couzens tallied three goals and an assist for four points for RPI.
Zoe Froimovitz made four saves for SLU, while Halley Feaga stopped eight for RPI. Â
St. Lawrence improved to 4-5 on the season and picked up their first conference win at 1-3, while RPI fell to 4-4 and 1-2.
The Saints hit the road next weekend for games at Union and Skidmore.
