Cate Rathnam tallied four goals to lead the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team in a 10-9 loss to the Garnet Chargers after a tight battle on Friday afternoon in Schenectady, N.Y.
Rathnam led the Scarlet and Brown with four goals and two assists, while
Tallis Tarbell and
Jessica LaPlaca each added a goal and two helpers.
Lily Stanton,
Phoebe Spaeth and
Jolie Osborne each scored once.
Ruthie Haims picked up three ground balls and caused three turnovers, while LaPlaca and
Caroline Hamilton each won two draws.
Union took an early 2-0 lead, but St. Lawrence rallied with a three-goal run, as the Saints and the Garnet Chargers battled to a 3-3 after the first quarter of play.
The back-and-forth battle continued into the second, as Spaeth scored first for the Saints. Gillian Joseph scored for Union to keep the game knotted up 4-4. Union's Lana Mickelson scored the final goal of the second to give the Garnet Chargers a 5-4 lead at the break.
Union took a two-goal lead to start the third quarter, but Rathnam tallied back-to-back goals for the Saints, just 42 seconds apart, to tie the game up 6-6 heading into the fourth.
The tightly contested battle continued as the teams traded goals to start the fourth, as Rathnam scored her fourth of the afternoon. The game was then tied 8-8 and 9-9 with 4:56 remaining.
Christina Guanci scored to give the Garnet Chargers a 10-9 edge with 3:03 to play. With just about 1:39 remaining Tarbell caused a turnover and secured the ground ball to give SLU possession, but Union was able to regain control off a Saints' turnover and run out the clock for the win.
Guanci led the Garnet Chargers with four goals and an assist.
Zoe Froimovitz made 13 saves for the Saints, while Union's Sydney Widlitz made eight.
Union edged the Saints 17-14 in shots on goal and won 15 draws to SLU's six. Both teams recorded 19 ground balls.
SLU moved to 4-6 on the season and 1-4 in Liberty League play, while Union improved to 4-4 and 3-0, respectively.
The Saints take on Skidmore tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
