Eoin Morrissey and
Ethan Harris doubled home five runs in total, but it was not enough as the St. Lawrence University baseball team fell to Hobart 9-5 on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Monroe Community College.
The two teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but game two was postponed and will be made up at a later date.
St. Lawrence fell to 4-5 with the loss and 0-2 in Liberty League play, while Hobart improved to 14-5 and 2-0 in conference action.
The Saints threatened at the top of the first in the game with a pair of one-out singles from
Eddie Morrissey and
John Gannon, but a double play ball in the next at-bat kept St. Lawrence off the board.
Instead, in the bottom half of the first, Hobart scored runners with a triple, a single, and an error to take an early 3-0 lead.
A lead off single from
Jack Finnegan in the second got the Saints rolling, and the speedy outfielder stole second before
Nolan Widrick earned a walk. A fly out pushed Finnegan to third, and
Eoin Morrissey hammered a double to right-center field to score both runners and cut into the deficit.
The Statesmen plated another run in the bottom of the second to make it 4-2. The game broke open in the bottom of the third as a two-RBI triple and an RBI-double ballooned their lead to 7-2. Hobart proceeded to score a run in the fifth and the seventh innings to make it 9-2 going into the top of the ninth.
St. Lawrence attempted to mount a comeback in the ninth, and once again Finnegan was electric on the basepaths, scorching a one-out double to right field. Pinch-hitter
George Proffitt was then hit by a pitch before Widrick singled through the right side to load the bases for Harris. The slugging third baseman roped a double into the gap in right field to score all three runners and make it a 9-5 score with one out.
Hobart replaced their pitcher, Teck Nash, with Chris Lockwood, and he was able to force a groundout and a strikeout to close out the game.
Joshua Polumbo started the game on the hill for the Saints and pitched one inning, and was relieved by
Noah Clausen, who pitched 1.1 innings and struck out one batter.
Michael Flyzik struck out three batters in two innings, while
James Morr (2.2) and
Will Nardella (1.0) each struck out two batters in the final 3.2 innings.
St. Lawrence will be back on the diamond on Tuesday, March 24, when the team heads to Pennsylvania to take on Dickinson College at 3:30 p.m. in Carlisle, Pa.
