Max Cloutier led the Saints offensively, going 3-for-5 with two RBI, but a late comeback effort came up short as the St. Lawrence University baseball team fell 6-4 against Dickinson College on Tuesday evening in Carlisle, Pa.
The Scarlet and Brown fell to 4-6 with the result, while the Red Devils improved to 13-6.
St. Lawrence got things going early with a leadoff single from
Mike Siano, who proceeded to steal second to put him in scoring position. A walk to
Jack Finnegan and
John Gannon loaded the bases with one out, but a double play ball got Dickinson out of the jam.
Brendan Young started on the hill and held the home team off the scoreboard in the first two innings of work.
The Saints gave the sophomore some run support in the top of the third as they took a 1-0 lead. Finnegan earned a four-pitch walk with one out and proceeded to show off his speed, swiping two bases.
Eddie Morrissey singled his teammate home with a shot up the middle to take the lead.
St. Lawrence once again threatened in the fourth as
John Donnellan scorched a double to left field and stole third.
Ethan Harris then walked and stole second to put two Saints in scoring position. A pop-out on a squeeze bunt and a groundout ended the threat.
Young stayed scoreless through the third, but the Red Devils took advantage of a pair of walks as they singled home the tying run. The sophomore forced a pop-out to minimize the damage. Dickinson ended up taking their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth as a two-out single spiraled into a hit by pitch, and a pair of RBI hits to make it 3-1.
Finnegan responded in the top of the sixth, plating a run on a fielder's choice to make it 3-2. Cloutier led off the inning with a single and advanced to third after a walk to Harris and a sacrifice bunt, where Finnegan brought him across home.
The two teams traded runs in the next two half-innings as Dickinson hit another RBI single to make it 4-2, before Cloutier doubled
Willie Landman home with a shot down the right field line, making it a one-run game once again.
The key inning for the Red Devils was the seventh, as they took a 6-3 lead thanks to a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk.
Nathan Jackson held the score at 6-3 with a key fly-out to keep the game within reach.
In the top of the ninth, with their back against the wall, the Saints attempted to mount a late comeback. After a fly-out to start the inning, Gannan walked, and Donnellan reached base thanks to a throwing error. Cloutier smoked the first pitch he saw in the next at-bat to score Gannon and put runners on first and third. The threat ended with a long fly-out to right field, securing the win for the Red Devils.
Young ended up pitching four innings and gave up three hits and one earned run.
Boden Driscoll and
JJ Humenay each got an inning of work before
Ryan McCausland took the next 0.2 innings. Jackson finished off the last 1.1 innings and gave up no hits and struck out one.
The Scarlet and Brown will stay down in the Keystone State and head to the Electric City tomorrow to take on Marywood University in a 3:30 p.m. contest in Scranton, Pa.
