Hickey Goes Four Scoreless; Albertson Drives Offense in Baseball's 8-4 Win at Marywood

Junior Gabe Albertson was hot from the dish, going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Liam Hickey was dominant on the hill, pitching four innings of two-hit, no-run ball as the St. Lawrence University baseball team beat Marywood 8-4 on Wednesday evening in Scranton, Pa.

The Scarlet and Brown improved to 5-6 with the win, while Marywood fell to 10-7.

St. Lawrence jumped out of the gates with a run in the first inning as Jack Finnegan reached on a hit by pitch before he was over to second with a John Gannon single to left field.  Albertson proceeded to single through the right side of the infield to bring Finnegan around to score.

Hickey sat the home team down in order in the first innings and gave up just one hit and a walk in the second before forcing a fly out to end the threat.

The Saints scored two more runs in the top of the third to go up 3-0. This time, it was Albertson who started the attack with another single. Riley Reimund doubled Albertson to third, and he was brought to home plate with an Eoin Morrissey single. Reimund ended up scoring in the next at-bat as a passed ball allowed him to touch home.

Another one-two-three inning in the third and a four-batter fourth for Hickey kept Marywood off the board and the lead at 3-0.

Marywood finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of two walks. An RBI single and an RBI double made it a 3-2 game going into the sixth.

St. Lawrence regained their three-run lead in the top of the sixth to make it 5-2. After a pop-out to start the inning, George Proffitt earned his first collegiate hit, and it was a good one. The first-year had the green light on a 3-1 count and hammered a fastball over the wall in right-center field for his first home run and first hit.

Nolan Widrick followed it with a single and came around to score when Finnegan scorched a triple to center field. In the top of the seventh, the Saints blew the game open with three more runs to make it 8-2.

Albertson led off the inning with a single and was pinch-run by Owen McClintock. The senior showed off his speed, legging out a run off another Reimund double. Matt Davis ended up scoring his first-year teammate with a single after a sacrifice bunt, and advanced to third with a pair of wild pitches. The sophomore came around from third as he and Proffitt executed a double-steal.

Marywood picked up a pair of runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh, but could not mount any more of a comeback.

Hickey had four innings of work in the start, allowing no runs on two hits and two strikeouts. Noah Clausen came in for 0.2 innings of work in relief, before James Morr took the following 1.1. Joe LaPrade, Joshua Polumbo, and David Zuhlsdorf took the final three innings and shut the door on the win.

St. Lawrence will head back to Canton and hop back into Liberty League play at home this weekend against RIT.
