After going down 4-0, the Saint made a valiant comeback effort, but that bid came short as the St. Lawrence University women's squash team fell 5-4 in the Liberty League Championship match on Sunday at the Robie Squash Center and Dordelman Championship Court.
St. Lawrence fell to 10-5 with the result.
The Saints went down 4-0 in the first four matches of the day, but they would slowly chip away at the deficit.
Eboni Atherley, who played on the Dordelman Court against Amelia King, cruised to an 11-8, 11-3, 11-3 win. Then at five,
Laura Franza also produced a sweep, winning 11-6, 11-6, 11-7 over Madeleine Ruggie. The match moved to 4-3 after a win at four, where
Madeleine Martin defeated DeNerah Chisholm 5-11, 11-3, 13-11, 11-5.
In the middle of those wins, the match teetered in the balance in the number eight spot, where
Ksenia Merkulova and Tess Lanza were trading blows. Lanza went up 2-0 in the match, but the captain Merkulova made a heroic comeback to knot the match up at 2-2. Lanza came through in the winner-take-all match to secure the all-important fifth win for Denison.
In the final match of the day,
Mariam Dodd took on Helena Fournaris at number three and secured an 11-9, 11-7, 12-14, 11-9 to make it a 5-4 final.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back at the Robie Squash Center and Dordelman Championship Court next weekend when the team hosts William Smith and Bates in their final two matches before Team Nationals.
