Men's Squash Beats Hobart and Denison to Advance to LL Title Match

The Saints picked up a pair of wins on the day, beating Hobart and Denison to advance to the Liberty League Championship match on day one of the Liberty League Tournament on Saturday at the Robie Squash Center and the Dordelman Championship Court.

The Scarlet and Brown, who improved to 5-9 on the season, will take on Rochester tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. for the title.

Match 1: St. Lawrence 9, Hobart 0

In the first match of the day, the Saints won all nine matches and lost just two games total, en route to the sweep.

At number one, Mina Wasseem took on Adam Le and won his match 1-6, 11-8, 11-6, while at two, Miguel Posada Villa took a 2-0 lead with 13-11 and 11-8 wins over Caio Paiva. After falling in the third game, Posada Villa came through with an 11-7 win for the match. In the third spot, Emirhan Sen faced Javier De La Vega on the Dordelman Court and took the 12-10, 11-6, 11-6 victory.

At four, Patrick Walford lined up against Peter Vorbach and won 11-4, 11-7, 11-4, while at five, Harrison Callaway raced out to a 2-1 lead with 11-7 and 13-11 wins, before winning game four 11-2. Athrva Yadav occupied the sixth spot alongside Mason Graham and won 11-3, 11-2, 11-1.

In the bottom three spots, Dmitry Stepanenko, Coby Galarza, and Jesus Peña all won their matches 3-0. Stepanenko took on Miles Mackey at seven and won 11-5, 11-4, 11-5, then Galarza defeated Jayden Saldana 11-9, 11-5, 11-6 at eight. Pena made quick work of his match at nine, defeating Billy Gantcher 11-3, 11-8, 11-5.

Match 2: St. Lawrence 6, Denison 3

St. Lawrence was tasked with Denison in the next round, with a berth in the Championship on the line. The Scarlet and Brown marched to a 3-0 lead early to get the ball rolling.

In the first group of three matches, Sen, Alexander Scott, and Gavin Cassidy came through for St. Lawrence. Sen played at three against Charles Fenwick IV and won 11-8, 11-2, 8-11, 11-1. Scott also won his match 3-1 at number five, beating Ross Falcon 11-2, 11-13, 11-7, 11-1. Cassidy occupied the eighth spot and battled to an 11-8, 12-10, 11-9 sweep of Wylly Molten.

In the next group of three matches, Walford came up huge for the Saints with a 3-0 win. He was in the fourth spot and took on Alex DeLuca, whom he beat 11-5, 11-8, 11-2, putting the Saints within a match of the Championship game.

The victory was clinched in the seventh spot, where Yadav took on Aimaan Zakaria and won 11-5, 11-5, 11-4. The lead ballooned to a 6-3 final in the final match of the day, where Callaway defeated Jackson Bragman 3-0.

The Scarlet and Brown will line up against the University of Rochester tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. to decide the Liberty League Championship.
