Alexa Davis and
Cheyenne Degeer scored, but four unanswered goals through the second and third periods led the No. 13 Colgate Raiders to a 6-2 win over the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team on Friday afternoon in Hamilton, N.Y.
St. Lawrence fell to 7-13-2 on the season and 4-6-0 in ECAC play, while Colgate improved to 11-10-1 and 6-4-1, respectively.
With 10.7Â seconds remaining in the first period, Davis walked in from the right circle and beat Raiders' goaltender Farah Walker glove side for the 1-0 lead just before the first intermission.
After the first 20 minutes, SLU held an 8-6 edge in shots on goal.
Three unanswered goals put the Raiders on top in the second.
Colgate's Elyssa Biederman knotted things up just about halfway through the period. As the Saints attempted to clear, Biederman knocked down a pass from the post to beat
Kassidy Lawrence on the doorstep.
Casey Borgiel doubled the lead for the Raiders on the power play, to take a 2-1 lead with 4:27 to play in the second and just over a minute later Biederman tallied her second of the game to give Colgate a 3-1 lead heading into the second intermission.
Biederman tacked on another goal to make it 4-1 at the start of the third, but the Saints answered just 26 seconds later at 17:19, as
Cheyenne Degeer tallied her first collegiate goal for the Scarlet and Brown, as she cashed in on a rebound after an initial wrap around chance from
Brooke Mulvihill and then scramble in front of the Raiders net to make it 4-2.
Colgate's Biederman added her fourth point of the game to make it 5-2.
With just under three minutes to play, the Saints pulled Lawrence looking to make a comeback, but Colgate's Emma Gervais Beauchamp tacked on an empty netter for the 6-2 final.
"We did a lot of really good things coming off the break. Especially in the first period," said head coach
Chris Wells. "Colgate took over in the second when we got into penalty trouble and got a few bounces to get a good lead."
"I liked our bounce back in the third, particularly after they made it 4-1. We came right back and scored to make to 4-2. This will be a good game for us getting back into the swing of it after a month break. Cornell is always a great test and we enjoy the games there!"
Lawrence made 28 saves for St. Lawrence, while Walker finished with 23 for the Raiders.
Colgate outshot the Saints 62-50, including 34-25 in shots on goal. The Raiders finished 1-for-4 on the power play.
The Saints will head to Ithaca to take on 10th-ranked Cornell Big Red tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
