Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Saints Upset No. 5 Quinnipiac, 3-1

Three first-year Saints scored and senior goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström made 35 saves, as the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team upset No. 5 Quinnipiac with a 3-1 win on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena.

With the win, SLU improved to 11-16-3 overall and 8-9-1 in ECAC play, while Quinnipiac fell to 21-7-2 and 11-6-1.

Getting things started for the Saints, Hayden Summers played the puck along the left side and sent it over to Alexa Davis below the goal line. Davis then found Mulvihill in the slot, who slammed it home as she slid to the ice for the 1-0 lead early on the power play.

The Saints held down the edge on the scoreboard after the first 20 minutes of play, but the Bobcats led 16-6 in shots on goal after the first.

St. Lawrence maintained their one-goal lead after the second frame with 17 saves from Nordström. The Bobcats continued to outshoot the Saints 33-11 after 40 minutes of play.

At 13:49 of the third period, the Scarlet and Brown extended their lead to two, as Taeyeon Kim scored her first collegiate goal for the Saints. Mulvihill added her second point of the night with an assist, as she found Kim high in the slot for the 2-0 lead.

Quinnipiac answered just about three minutes later, as Zoe Uens picked up a goal on a rebound chance on the power play.

The Bobcats pulled Felicia Frank with 2:16 to play in the third looking for the extra attacker.

With 1:29 remaining, Ella Nancarrow added a bit of insurance for SLU, as she pulled the puck off the boards deep in the Saints zone and fired a long range shot down ice for the empty netter.

The Bobcats continued to pull Frank and applied heavy pressure, but Nordström was up to the task. With 1:05 to go, Kahlen Lamarche was called for a game misconduct for boarding and Frank was sent back to goal.

Despite the extra attacked pressure in the latter minutes of the third period, the Saints peppered the Bobcats, outshooting them 33-9, including a 24-3 advantage in shots on goal in the third period

"A real great effort and probably our best period of the year in the third," said head coach Chris Wells. "It was well timed for a lot of reasons."

"Emma was excellent early on and really gave us a chance to make the push in the third. The league is getting tighter and tighter so these three points were a big boost!"

Nordström made 35 saves for the Saints, while Frank finished with 32 for the Bobcats.

The Saints finished 1-for-3 on the power play, while Quinnipiac was 1-for-4.

St. Lawrence will head back out on the road, as they travel to Brown and Yale next weekend, February 6-7.
