The St. Lawrence University men's track and field team put together a commanding performance on their home turf this Saturday, securing a second-place finish at the St. Lawrence Invitational.
The Saints showcased their depth and local dominance at the Newell Field House, racking up five event wins and several podium finishes across both the track and field disciplines.
"This weekend was a lot of fun," said Saints head coach
John Newman. "We had three guys get things started on Friday with the heptathlon competition. Tucker helped lead Brogan and Brendan, both first timers in the Hep. Things are starting to really click for a lot of our team members right now. Erik picking up another win and continuing to drop time in the hurdles helped set the tone on the track this morning. Bodie testing his range with the 60 today has now PRd in a different event in each of the last three meets. Caleb picked up a hard earned win in the 200 and Nick and Pat put up a big 1-2 finish in the mile."
The Saints were particularly lethal in the distance and hurdle events, setting a high bar early in the meet.
Erik Marelli led the way in the 60-meter hurdles, sprinting to a first-place finish with a sharp time of 8.43.
In the mile run, St. Lawrence dominated the top of the leaderboard as
Nick Lyndaker captured the individual title in 4:20.92, closely followed by teammate
Patrick Russell, who secured the runner-up spot in 4:22.29.
Success continued in the sprint transitions, where
Caleb Young outpaced the field to take first place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.02.
The Saints also showed impressive depth in the 300-meter dash, as
Kristofer Mellor and
Spencer Thoma went two-three, finishing in 38.11 and 38.53, respectively. This sprinting prowess translated perfectly to the relays, where the Saints swept both events. The 4x200-meter relay team of Thoma,
Bodie Molnar, Mellor, and Jacob Kunin took gold in 1:34.86, while the 4x400-meter squad of
Cyrus Goetze,
Riley Cushman, Russell, and Lyndaker capped off the track events with a winning time of 3:35.40.
In the field, St. Lawrence picked up vital points to cement their second-place team standing.
Brendan O'Horo cleared 4.00 meters in the pole vault to earn a second-place finish.
John Mahoney provided a strong performance in the long jump, leaping 6.35 meters to secure third place.
The Saints will look to carry this momentum forward as they continue their indoor season campaign.
