First-year
Ella Nancarrow scored to tie the game, and Emma-Sofie Nordström sent the game to a shootout with a last second save, as the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team tied Harvard 1-1 on Friday night at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center in Cambridge, Mass.
St. Lawrence earned the shootout win with goals from
Mave O'Hagan and
Rylan Haslam, combined with saves from
Sami Phelan.
A bit of back-and-forth action to start things off, but the Saints held an edge in the overall play. SLU led 10-7 in shots on goal through the first 20 minutes, but the first period remained scoreless.
The Saints started off the second strong with 50 seconds remaining on a Crimson penalty, recording the only shot attempts and shots on goal through nearly the first nine minutes of play. Â
Harvard's first shot of the period ended in a goal off a wrap around shot from Carla McSweeney to make it 1-0 in favor of the Crimson with 11:09 to play.
St. Lawrence continued to outshoot the Crimson by a whopping 52-20 margin, including 22-10 in shots on goal after two periods, but just couldn't get the right one to bounce, as Harvard had blocked 17 shots thus far and held onto their 1-0 lead.
The duo of
Alexa Davis and
Brooke Mulvihill nearly knotted the game five minutes into the third, but Mulvihill's back-handed shot caught the shoulder of Ainsley Tuffy.
Hanna Olson had another solid opportunity with a turnover deep in Harvard's zone.
Nancarrow broke through from the Saints, with a snipe from the right circle that beat Tuffy bar down to tie the game 1-1 with 3:42 remaining in the third, which would eventually force overtime.
Mulvihill,
Lilien Benakova and
Kennedy Wilson all produced quality chances in overtime, with Wilson applying a big forecheck and turnover below Harvard's goal line.
Just after Wilson's opportunity, Nordström denied Ella Lucia on the breakaway with seconds remaining to finish off the tie and send the game to a shootout.
Phelan stopped three shots, while O'Hagan went with the backhand to tie the shootout and Haslam secured shootout win as she pumped the brakes and beat Tuffy.
"We played a solid game this evening. Games always seem to be like this at Harvard. Great goaltending and chances in OT," said head coach Chris Wells.
"We really stayed with it to get the points tonight and that will be big in the standings. Most importantly was how we played and the efforts we got up and down the lineup. Tuffy was excellent in the net and we had to work to get the tie late. Nancarrow has been shooting the puck well lately and she made the most of the one tonight. Happy for Mave and Sami to get some rewards in the shoutout for their day in and out efforts."Â
Nordström finished with 22 saves for the Saints, while Tuffy recorded 31 for Harvard.
St. Lawrence outshot Harvard 80-43 including 36-27 in shots on goal, while the Crimson blocked 26 shots to the Saints' eight.
The Saints moved to 9-15-3 overall and 6-8-1 in ECAC play, while Harvard moved to 11-10-2 and 5-8-2.
SLU takes on Dartmouth tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
