Mave O'Hagan scored her first career goal,
Kassidy Lawrence made 28 saves, and
Kennedy Wilson beat the Big Green in overtime for the second time this season, as the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team defeated Dartmouth 2-1 in the extra frame on Saturday afternoon in Hanover, N.H.
With the overtime win, the Saints improved to 10-15-3 overall and 7-8-1 in league play, while Dartmouth fell to 4-17-3 and 2-11-3.
The Saints applied early pressure but were called for two penalties and successfully killed off a 5-on-3 opportunity for the Big Green.
Mave O'Hagan recorded her first career goal to give the Saints an early 1-0 lead. O'Hagan disrupted Dartmouth's play below the Saints blue line, outskated three trailing Big Green players and went top shelf to beat Michaela Hesová for the goal.
St. Lawrence led 22-7 in shots on goal after the first 20 minutes, including logging 12 shots on the power play. Â
With St. Lawrence in the box for a five-minute penalty. Dartmouth took an initial shot from the point, which was stopped by
Kassidy Lawrence. Lawrence then stopped the rebound, but fell to the ice and the puck was poked free and pushed over the goal line. The Saints challenged for goaltender interference, but the goal stood for Dartmouth's Izee Powell to tie the game 1-1.
SLU killed off the remainder of the major and ended the second period on the power play.
The third period remained scoreless, with both teams killing off penalties in the latter half of the third, eventually forcing overtime for the second time this weekend.
After a bit of back-and-forth, Wilson collected the puck in the neutral zone, swooped in from the right side, fended off the defense and went over the shoulder of Hesová for the overtime goal. Wilson beat the Big Green in overtime for the second time this season, the first at Appleton and this weekend on the road.
"One of the biggest things that we wanted to work on heading into the weekend was to try to generate some momentum off our power plays and feel like we did that," said head coach
Chris Wells.Â
"We did a good job in third period blocking shots in key areas and then Kass was up to the task and made some good stops. Then a great effort by Kenny dropping her shoulder. She'd been working on that all week in practice and was able to get her second overtime goal against Dartmouth. As you can see, when you don't score a lot of goals, it's tough to win. It's even tougher to win on the road. This is a big road win to head back with."
Lawrence made 28 saves for the Scarlet and Brown, while Hesová recorded 35 for the Big Green.
Both teams registered 59 shots apiece and the Saints finished with a 37-29 edge in shots on goal.
St. Lawrence returns home for a pair of early games at Appleton next weekend, as they host Princeton on January 30 at 3 p.m. and Quinnipiac on January 31 at 2 p.m.
