Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Saints Fall to No. 8 Princeton, 2-0

Emma-Sofie Nordström made 31 saves, but the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team fell to eighth-ranked Princeton 2-0 on Friday afternoon at Appleton Arena.

Alexa Davis led the Scarlet and Brown in shots on goal with seven, while Rylan Haslam and Kennedy Wilson each added five.

Quick pace and strong goaltending on both ends of the ice, spanned the better part of today's game against the Tigers.

St. Lawrence got the better of shots in the first, outshooting Princeton 13-7 in the first 20 minutes.

That edge continued through the second, as SLU continued to hold the edge in shots on goal 23-14 and Nordström making 13 of her saves in the second period.

With 8:31 to play in the third, Riley Sorokan left a drop pass for Gabby Kim, who fired a shot into traffic from the right circle. Kim's shot was tipped over the glove of Nordström by Angelina DiGirolamo, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

With 1:23 to play, Nordström headed to the bench to give the Saints an extra attacker.

But with nine seconds left, Mackenzie Alexander was able to disrupt the play at the Saints' blue line and send an empty netter down ice for the 2-0 final.

"We probably played our best game of the second half today against one of the top teams in the league," said head coach Chris Wells. "We had plenty of great chances that didn't go in. Our effort was excellent and pace was right where we want it heading down the home stretch.

"We will get the bounces if we keep the energy and effort tomorrow vs. Quinnipiac."

Nordström recorded 31 saves, while Uma Corniea made 30 for the Tigers.

After the full 60 minutes, Princeton outshot the Saints 58-56, including 33-30 in shots on goal.

St. Lawrence moved to 10-16-3 on the season and 7-9-1 in league play, while Princeton improved to 18-6-0 and 13-4-0.

The Saints will continue their weekend battle with ranked opponents, as they take on No. 5 Quinnipiac tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
