The St. Lawrence University men's track and field team produced a historic performance at the Utica Winter Opener, headlined by a new school record and several regional qualifying marks.
Nick Lyndaker delivered the highlight of the meet in the 1000-meter run. Lyndaker sprinted to a second-place finish with a blistering time of 2:26.72, shattering the St. Lawrence program record for the event.
The existing record had held for 42 years, set by Dave Elster in 1984. Lyndaker beat it by two seconds. Lyndaker, a native of Canton, N.Y. and senior on both the track and field and cross country squads, now holds program records in the 1500-meter run, 3000-meter run, and 5000-meter run to go along with his 1000-meter distinction.
He now holds the most program records of any athlete to wear the Saints' uniform, becoming the most decorated record-holder in Saints men's track and field program history.
The success in the distance events continued with
Patrick Russell, who earned a third-place finish in the 3000-meter run. Russell crossed the finish line in 8:41.11, providing the Saints with significant points in the long-distance category.
St. Lawrence's relay teams were equally impressive, securing two runner-up finishes. The 4x200-meter relay squad, consisting of
Caleb Young,
Bodie Molnar,
Spencer Thoma, and Kris Mellor, posted a time of 1:32.44. This performance not only earned them second place but also met the AARTFC qualifying standard for the postseason.
In the 4x400-meter relay, the quartet of Lyndaker,
Riley Cushman,
Adam Lee, and
Cyrus Goetze also claimed a second-place finish, clocking in at 3:35.15 to cap off a strong day on the track.
The Saints also saw success in the individual sprints and field events.
Bodie Molnar took fourth place in the 200-meter dash, setting a new personal best with a time of 22.81.
In the field,
John Mahoney leaped to a second-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.50 meters, while
Brendan O'Horo cleared 4.30 meters in the pole vault to secure fourth place.
