Saints Cruise to Pair of Wins over Castleton, SUNY Potsdam at SLU Triad

The St. Lawrence University volleyball team took two wins on the day with 3-1 wins over both VTSU Castleton and SUNY Potsdam at the SLU Triad in front of two big crowds on Laurentian Weekend.

"We had our share of unforced errors today in both matches, but when it mattered the most, we found a way to string points together," said Saints head coach Shelly Roiger. "I do like how this team has gotten used to winning and that mindset is everything."

Game 1: St. Lawrence 3, VTSU Castleton 1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-19)

The Saints trailed early in the first set, with the Spartans stringing a rally together to put the Saints down 6-1. That gave the Spartans a cushion, which they were able to keep for the majority of the set. The Saints got it down to a one-point deficit at 23-22 on a Vanessa Latam service ace, but Castleton took the next two points to end the set.

The Saints went on to win the next three sets. In the second, the Saints took an early 8-3 lead with a pair of kills by Araiza Acum-Santos. They increased their lead to 23-15 late in the set with a 5-0 run, benefiting from two kills each by Acum-Santos and Latam.

In the third, both teams battled with back-and-forth rallies. The Saints worked back from a 7-5 deficit to take the lead 10-7. Like the first set, no team broke past a five-point lead. SLU took this set 25-20. They had a similar victory in the fourth to win it 25-19.

Acum-Santos lead the team in kills with 13, followed by Bridget Gammons with 12 and Sofia Velasquez with 11.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 3, SUNY Potsdam 1 (25-17, 16-25, 25-12, 25-18)

The Saints took the first set 25-17 with seven of their points coming from service aces. Maggie Layman and Audrey Bibbins also picked up kills during the set.

Starting off in the second, the Bears took a 5-0 lead. They were able to hold onto this lead the entire set, resulting in a 25-16 decision in favor of Potsdam.

In the third, the Saints built up a significant lead. Down 5-3, St. Lawrence recorded nine of the next 10 points to build their lead up to 12-6. Later, they went on a nine-point streak with three Latam aces, and kills by Acum-Santos and Gammons. That made the score 21-8 Saints, and they cruised to a 25-12 victory.

Finally, after a back-and-forth set, the Saints came away victorious with a 25-18 win in the set. The set was very bac and forth, with no more than a three-point lead either direction. Kaitlyn Putman and Kalina Natcheva also picked up kills on the day.
With the victory, the Saints have now exceeded their 2024 win total before the end of September.
