Gammons Sets Two Career Highs, Acum-Santos Adds 14 Kills in Saints' Win Over SUNY Canton

Bridget Gammons set a career-high in both blocks (6) and hitting percentage (.625), and Araiza Acum-Santos had 14 kills, as the St. Lawrence University volleyball team improved their record to 9-4 with a 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-20, 25-14) win over SUNY Canton in a midweek crosstown non-conference affair.

"We got off to a slow start with several unforced errors to start the match," said Saints head coach Shelly Roiger. "On a positive side, our hitting percentage increased by over 100 points each set, culminating with a .429 percentage in set four. As we begin conference play this weekend, it will be important for us to start strong and stay that way to be successful."

Gammons and Vanessa Latam added 10 and eight kills respectively, with Latam also contributing 30 assists.

In the first set, the Roos benefitted from a strong start, taking a 4-0 lead early. Trailing 6-3, the Saints went on a five-point run to put them in the lead for the first time, including kills two from Acum-Santos. Despite outscoring the Roos after the first four points of the set, Canton used the strong start to edge St. Lawrence.

The Saints worked from a 9-9 tie to go on a six-point run. During this stretch, the team capitalized off unforced Roos and three aces from Latam. This propelled the Saints to a 15-9 advantage, giving them plenty of cushion to coast through the set 25-18.

The Saints continued to start well in the third, going up 5-0 to kick off the set. Adeline Riesenberger had three kills early in the third. With a narrow 8-6 lead, the Scarlet and Brown tacked on another seven to take a nine-point lead. With a 21-15 advantage, the Roos had their own five-point run, closing the score in at 21-20 in favor of the Saints. This was shut down quickly with four straight St. Lawrence points to end the set. The Saints won the final set by using a 4-0 and 5-0 run, ultimately winning the set by nine.

In addition to her career highs, Gammons did not record a single error over the four-set match.

In the next two weeks, the Saints play four Liberty League matchups. St. Lawrence heads to Rochester to play RIT for a 7 p.m. start time Friday. On Saturday, the Saints will play William Smith at 2 p.m.
