Gilmer Dazzles With Five Points; Three Score Career Firsts in Men's Soccer's 8-1 Win Over Potsdam

The St. Lawrence University men's soccer team delivered a dominant offensive performance on Wednesday afternoon, rolling to an 8-1 victory over SUNY Potsdam at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

With the win, the Saints improved to 2-4-0 on the season, while the Bears dropped to 4-2-1.

"It was a good performance from the team today!" said head coach Mike Toshack. "We were able to move the ball quickly and open gaps in the Potsdam defensive block. We are now finished with the non-conference phase and look forward to beginning the Liberty League slate with a tough opening game away at Hobart on Saturday."

The eight-goal barrage was the most for the Saints since the 2022 season, when the team tied a program record in a 9-0 win against SUNY Canton.

St. Lawrence wasted no time asserting control, scoring five goals in the first half. Kyle Reddish opened the scoring in the 12th minute for the Scarlet and Brown, capitalizing on a blocked shot from captain Nicholas Petrone and burying the rebound in the top bin.

Just two minutes later, Reddish threaded a through ball to Henry Hart, who found Ryan Campbell for an easy finish on an unattended goal to make it 2-0.

Grant Gilmer made a seismic impact on the match, assisting on two goals just a minute apart before scoring one of his own in the 43rd minute. The winger played a give-and-go with Kenneth Mejia Lopez in the 22nd minute, setting up the first-year's first collegiate goal. Gilmer then beat a defender on the left wing and centered a pass to Petrone, who knocked in the Saints' fourth goal. Gilmer capped the half with a header off a long cross from Ben Lee, making it 5-0 in favor of the Scarlet and Brown.

The Saints added three more in the second half. Eric Edmonds scored in the 63rd minute, followed by Henry Blaxter in the 67th, and Verus Kibanga in the 82nd. Blaxter and Kibanga joined Mejia Lopez in recording their first career goals, while Tomas Ronzoni and Neel Mitra each tallied their first collegiate assists in the second half.

SUNY Potsdam broke up the clean sheet in the 82nd minute with a goal from Wyatt Mokey, assisted by Jayson Viola.

St. Lawrence outshot the Bears 33-4, including a 20-1 advantage in shots on goal, and held a 9-0 edge in corner kicks.

Goalkeepers Zach Amato and Evan Widrick split time in the net, playing 45 minutes apiece in the win.

The Saints will look to carry momentum into their Liberty League opener this Saturday, September 20, when they travel to Hobart for a 3 p.m. match.
