The St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team scored four goals in a strong fourth-quarter effort, but fell short, as an early lead lifted RIT to a 13-9 win in the final regular season game on Saturday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.
Neve Ley,
Caroline Hamilton, Pheobe Spaeth all had two goals each, while
Ashley Mudd,
Cate Rathnam, and
Lily Stanton each had one. On the defensive end,
Haley Sundstrom had a team-high four caused turnovers along with four ground balls, as
Brigette Gable picked up a team-best seven ground balls. Hamilton and Ley both won two draw controls each.Â
RIT jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Rathnam and Stanton matched them with goals of their own to tie up at two. The Tigers quickly regained their lead as they went on a three-goal run. Ley put one in at the end of the first to make it 5-3 after the first 15 minutes of play.
Ley scored her second goal of the game to begin the second to put the Saints within one, yet RIT found another pair of goals to regain their three-goal lead. Spaeth fired in a shot to cut their lead to two, yet the Tigers quickly matched it to remain up three heading into the break.
The Saints could not gain any traction in the third, as RIT scored four unanswered goals to go up by seven.
In the final quarter the Scarlet and Brown outscored the Tigers 4-1. Hamilton found a pair of goals, along with Spaeth and Mudd, but it wasn't enough, as RIT hung on to their first-half lead to end the game 13-9.
SLU fell to 7-9 overall and 5-5 in the Liberty League, as RIT improves to 10-5 overall and 6-3 in conference play.
Zoe Froimovitz made five saves in the effort, and RIT's Grace McDonald had nine saves in the match.
The Saints earned the sixth seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament with the head-to-head win over Vassar. SLU will travel back to RIT to play the third-seeded Tigers in a first round game on Tuesday, April 29th. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
