Jessica LaPlaca recorded a hat trick and
Phoebe Spaeth scored to send the game to overtime, but RIT's Zoe Heffernan scored with 1:43 to play in the extra frame, to give the third-seeded Tigers a 13-12 win over the sixth-seeded St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team in the first round of the Liberty League playoffs on Tuesday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.
Caroline Hamilton,
Neve Ley and Spaeth each had a pair of goals, while
Ashley Mudd, Kiera Dodd, and
Cate Rathnam all had one goal. Defensively,
Kelsey O'Brien,
Ellie Camp, and
Suzy L'Hommedieu all had two caused turnovers. Spaeth scooped up four ground balls and Hamilton won three draw controls.
The Saints and the Tigers were evenly matched in the first. Dodd was the first to score in the game, but was quickly matched by Lily DePalma to tie it at one. A pair of goals coming from Mudd, and LaPlaca put SLU up two, but RIT had a pair of goals of their own to end the first tied 3-3.
LaPlaca, Ley, and Hamilton all found the back of the net in the Scarlet and Brown's three-goal run to go up 6-3. The Tigers matched the Saints' run and tied the game once again, 6-6. Hamilton was able to sneak a shot in with 18 seconds to go before halftime, and gifted the Saints a one-goal lead.
Rathnam found her first goal to kick off the second half and give St. Lawrence a two-goal lead. RIT once again sunk a pair of goals tie the game up at eight. Ley and LaPlaca were responsible for a pair of goals to go back up by two, but the Tigers were able to put one more in before the third ended to cut the deficit to one.
RIT opened the final quarter with another pair of goals to go up one, but this time Spaeth got in on the scoring action and tied the game up at 11. The Tigers scored with 7:57 to play in the fourth to take a 12-11 lead, but just 26 seconds later Spaeth netted her second goal of the quarter to tie the game at 12 with 7:31 left to play and eventually send the game to overtime.
The Saints won the opening draw in the extra frame, but a turnover put the ball back in the hands of the Tigers. Heffernan was granted a free-position attempt with 1:45 to play and fired a shot from the top of the arc to give the Tigers the overtime win.
Zoe Froimovitz made 10 saves for the Saints, while Grace McDonald recorded five saves for RIT.
SLU held the slight edge in ground balls (18-17) and saves (10-8), as the Tigers held a slight advantage in shots (30-28).
The Saints close their season at 7-10 overall and 5-5 in Liberty League play. RIT will advance to the semifinals and play No. 2 Ithaca on Friday, May 2.
