Cate Rathnam and
Lily Stanton each recorded their first career hat tricks, as the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team took down Clarkson 12-6 in the Route 11 rivalry at North Country Field Wednesday afternoon in Canton, N.Y.
SLU jumps to 7-8 overall and 5-4 in the Liberty League, while Clarkson falls to 9-7 overall and 3-6 in the conference.
Caroline Hamilton and
Neve Ley scored two goals apiece, as
Hannah Jackson scored her first collegiate goal and Kiera Dodd also scored for the Scarlet and Brown. On the defensive side,
Suzy L'Hommedieu led the team in caused turnovers with three, and
Haley Sundstrom had a team-high four ground balls. Ley finished with a team-best four draw control wins.Â
The Golden Knights opened the match with two goals within the first five minutes to grab a quick 2-0 lead. The Scarlet and Brown answered back, as Stanton put in a shot to cut their lead in half. The remainder of the first was back-and forth as Clarkson put in two more goals and were matched by Hamilton and Ley, who squeezed in a goal with five seconds left in the first to bring the game back within one.
The Saints claimed the lead in the second and never looked back, as they held Clarkson scoreless and went on a four-goal run. Jackson scored off a free position shot, followed by Hamilton, Ley, and Stanton, all finding their second goals of the game to go up 7-4 heading into the half.
St. Lawrence continued to dominate in the third, holding the Golden Knights scoreless once again. Rathnam put in three in a row for the hat trick and Dodd found her first of the game to grab the seven-goal lead.
Clarkson ended their scoring drought in the fourth with two goals. Stanton secured her hat trick in the fourth, as SLU took home the 12-6 win in their final regular season home game.
"I give our team a ton of credit for showing up and willing that win," said head coach
Tom Ryan. "Our defense tightened up after the first quarter and our offense really got going. We've got a lot of heart and the effort and determination from back to front is inspiring."
Zoe Froimovitz recorded four saves for the Scarlet and Brown, while Riley Donovan had nine saves for the Golden Knights.
The Saints will head on the road for their final regular season game, as they play RIT at noon on Saturday, April 26 in Rochester, N.Y.
