Saints Take First Place at SLU Open

Multiple first-place finishes led to a first-overall team finish for the St. Lawrence University women's track and field team, as they wrapped up their home season with the SLU Open Friday night.

In the 60-meter hurdles, Amelia Berthold matched her personal record in the event, with a 9.87 time to finish first overall.

First-year Paige Poirier registered her first-career individual victory in the 3000-meter run, crossing the line in first with a time of 11:22.73. She was nearly 25 full seconds faster than her nearest competitor from Plattsburgh State.

Ashley Wieland set a personal record in the women's 5000-meter run, finishing the distance race in 20:55.29. She placed second overall – Adeline Moore won the race for St. Lawrence, with a time of 20:44.67.

Another second-place finisher to down a personal record in the event was Avery Blanchard. The first year crossed the line second in the mile run in a time of 5:20.74. Quinn Sirgany won the event, with a time of 5:20.40.

In the relays, the 4x400-meter team of Sirgany, Blanchard, Cameran Stone and Carly Zack pulled out a first-place finish in the event, putting a team performance of 4:35.36 together in the event to beat Potsdam State and Plattsburgh State.

In the field events, it was Lola Buckley earning a first-place finish. It came in the shot put, where her 9.93-meter throw on her third attempt was enough to propel her to victory in the event. That was a new personal-best for the first-year.

Elsewhere, Halla Chappell took first place in the pole vault, with a jump of 2.80 meters. St. Lawrence also got a second-place finish from Rosemary Fleischmann in the weight throw.

The SLU Open marked the last weekend of competition for St. Lawrence, as they now enter postseason play with the Liberty League championships in Ithaca, N.Y. That begins Friday, February 28.
