First-year
Rylan Haslam netted her third multi-goal game of the season, as the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team scored three goals in the second period, but the 10th-ranked Clarkson Golden Knights rallied for a 4-3 overtime win in ECAC play on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.
A slew of penalties early in the first led to a 5-on-3 opportunity for the Golden Knights. The Saints successfully killed off the 5-on-3, but Clarkson managed to strike while still on the power play, as Kate Manness rang a shot off the crossbar and Sena Catterall made a diving play to make it 1-0.
Clarkson held onto their 1-0 lead after the first 20 minutes, and the Golden Knights led 11-9 in shots on goal.
The Saints flipped the table in the second, scoring three straight goals to build a 3-1 lead.
The first goal came off the stick of Haslam.
Cheyenne Degeer played the puck towards the center from the right side, and Haslam was there to tip the puck between the legs of Clarkson goaltender Arianne Leblanc for the tie game.
Just about a minute and a half later,
Lilien Benakova fed
Meghan Crowley at the Saints blue line, Crowley then flew down the right side and sniped a shot over the shoulder of Leblanc to make it 2-1.
Haslam scored her second of the game on the power play, marking her third multi-goal game of the season.
Hanna Olson passed back for
Ella Nancarrow, who found Haslam just outside the crease and a short-angled shot put SLU up 3-1.
Clarkson pulled Leblanc after the third goal and put Holly Gruber in net for the Golden Knights.
Clarkson's Jaela Carter scored on a shot from the point that made it through traffic, with 4:43 left to play in the second to bring the game back within one.
After the second period, shots on goal were even at 21-21.
Sara Manness tied the game for the Golden Knights, as her shot was deflected for the 3-3 tie and the lone goal of the third period.
St. Lawrence headed into their eighth overtime game of the season. The Saints put some quality chances on net and
Kassidy Lawrence made two huge stops including a 2-on-1 break, but Sara Manness scored her second of the game to lift Clarkson to a 4-3 win in the third meeting of the season.
"I loved the way our team battled and finished out the semester," said head coach
Chris Wells. "We had plenty of chances to win it tonight and so did Clarkson. Both goalies were excellent late in the game and in overtime."
Lawrence made 29 saves for the Saints, while Leblanc finished with 13 and Gruber made 14 for the Golden Knights.
Clarkson finished 2-for-5 on the power play and edged the Saints in shots on goal 33-30. The Saints went 1-for-3 on the power play and blocked 14 shots to Clarkson's nine.
"We used this first semester to build as a team and then be able to return in January seasoned for a strong second half with the experiences we have had since September," Wells added. "Lots of close games to use to our advantage. As for the game today. We had some great bounce back after spending the better part of the first ten minutes killing penalties. The team really stayed with it and got rewarded with some goals in the second. Kass was excellent again and it was another entertaining game vs. Clarkson."
St. Lawrence moved to 7-12-2 overall and 4-5-0 in league play, while Clarkson improved to 11-6-2 and 6-2-1.
The Saints are off for the remainder of the fall semester and will return to action with a pair of road games at Colgate and Cornell on January 9-10.
