The Saints went 1-1 on the day as the No. 25 St. Lawrence University men's squash team defeated Vassar 7-2, before falling 5-4 against Haverford on the campus of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
St. Lawrence saw their record level off at 2-2 for the season.
Match 1: No. 25 St. Lawrence 7, No. 33 Vassar 2
St. Lawrence got strong play out of the top two spots in the ladder with
Emirhan Sen and
Miguel Posada Villa taking wins. Sen took on Konstantinos Georgallides at number one and won 11-6, 11-4, 11-6, while Posada Villa defeated Matthew Okulski 11-6, 11-8, 11-5 at two.
Patrick Walford,
Harrison Callaway, and
Gavin Cassidy also provided 3-0 sweeps in the four through six spots, respectively. Walford took on Aqeel Merchant and won 11-5, 11-2, 11-0, while Callaway defeated Gabriel Lugo 11-7, 11-5, 11-7. Cassidy took on Julian Cadenas at six and won 11-4, 11-4, 11-5.
At the bottom of the ladder,
Andrey Bakulev won 3-1 at eight, while
Daniel Cephas earned a win by default at nine.
Alexander Scott played in the three spot for the Saints, but after winning the first game, he fell in the second game before retiring.
Match 2: No. 25 St. Lawrence 4, No. 28 Haverford 5
St. Lawrence got wins from the one, three, and four spots early to take a 3-2 lead against Haverford. Sen, Walford, and Callaway all doubled up their win totals for the day with 3-0 wins in their respective matches.
Haverford ended up earning another win, however, to make it a 3-3 match with wins at six, seven, and eight.
The Saints regained the lead in the second spot when Posada Villa took on Henry Jiang and won 11-8, 11-6, 11-7.
Haverford won in the nine spot, however, setting up a winner-take-all match at number five.
In the decisive match, Cassidy took on Qianzhi Zhao at five, but was only able to win one game as the match went to Haverford.
St. Lawrence will be back on the court on Saturday, December 6, when the team hosts Navy at the Robie Squash Center.
