First-year
Rylan Haslam led the Saints with eight shots, but a goal in the first period led Harvard to a 1-0 win over the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena.
Just four minutes into the first period, Annie Sun fired a shot from the point and Emily Hamann flipped the rebound over the leg of Emma-Sofie Nordström for the 1-0 lead.
After the first 20 minutes, Harvard held onto their 1-0 lead and St. Lawrence held a 9-8 edge in shots on goal.
The second period proved to be evenly matched, as St. Lawrence continued with just a slight 18-17 edge in shots, but were unable to find the equalizer.
The Saints' two best opportunities came off the sticks of
Lilien Benakova and
Kiley Mastel. Benakova fired a shot that rang off the post, and Mastel nearly cashed in on a doorstep rebound, but was turned away by the leg pad of Izzy Whynot.
With 2:06 to play in the third, the Saints pulled Nordström but were unable to find the back of the net with the extra attacker.
"We gave a good push in the third to try and tie things up, but Whynot was excellent and Harvard did a nice job keeping us off our game in the middle of the period and for good chunks of time in the first two," said head coach
Chris Wells.
"We will continue to get better and improve each weekend and we will be able to take plenty from our games vs. Dartmouth/Harvard. Goaltending has been as good as any team in the country and we are getting our chances. Next up will be a big road weekend at Qunnipiac and Princeton."
Nordström made 21 saves for the Scarlet and Brown, while Whynot stopped 34 for Harvard.
St. Lawrence led 34-22 in shots on goal, while neither team was able to capitalize on the power play, as the Saints were 0-for-2 and Harvard was 0-for-1.
With the loss, SLU fell to 5-6-1 and 3-1-0 in ECAC play, while Harvard improved to 3-3-0 and 1-3-0 respectively.
The Saints go back on the road next weekend, as they travel to Quinnipiac and Princeton on November 7-8.
