Saints Take Back-to-Back Straight-Set Wins Over Keuka, SUNY Poly

The St. Lawrence University volleyball team didn't drop a single set at Saturday's SUNY Poly Triad. They beat Keuka in straight sets to kick the day off, then followed it up with a victory over host SUNY Poly, both 3-0.

They now enter their final weekend of the season with a record of 15-11.

"Today was a good bounce-back day," said Saints head coach Shelly Roiger. "The team did a great job of minimizing hitting errors and forced the opponents to make plays throughout the day.  They had great energy throughout the day and I'm really proud of how they responded to a tough loss from Friday night."

Game 1: Keuka 0, St. Lawrence 3 (25-11, 25-18, 25-19)

The Saints jumped on Keuka early in the opening set, using a 9-1 run sparked by three straight service aces from Maggie Layman to take control. Araiza Acum-Santos and Bridget Gammons combined for five kills in the frame, while Vanessa Latam guided the offense with crisp setting and tempo. St. Lawrence's serve-receive game kept Keuka off balance, and the Saints closed the set on a 6-0 run.

Set two saw Keuka show more resistance, briefly leading early before St. Lawrence's serving again swung the momentum. Layman continued her strong run from the line with four aces in the set, including back-to-back serves that widened the gap to 8-2. Acum-Santos delivered timely kills on the left side and finished the set with her third ace of the match. Latam dished out 10 assists in the frame, spreading the attack across multiple hitters as the Saints pulled away late for a 25-19 victory.

The third set was highlighted by sharp execution at the net, as St. Lawrence totaled four team blocks and hit .286 to close out the sweep. Acum-Santos led the charge with five kills in the final frame, including back-to-back strikes midway through to extend the lead to 14-9. Riesenberger and Rose Meihaus each added key kills, while Sofia Velasquez and Gammons teamed up for a pair of late blocks to secure the 25-18 win.

Acum-Santos paced the Saints with 12 kills, three aces, and eight digs, while Gammons contributed six kills and two blocks. Layman finished with a season-high six aces and six digs, and Latam handed out 24 assists. Velasquez chipped in four kills and three block assists, and Cassady Smith anchored the defense with nine digs.

Game 2: SUNY Poly 0, St. Lawrence 3 (25-16, 25-19, 25-18)

St. Lawrence opened the match with a dominant first set, racing out to a 5-0 lead behind a pair of service aces from Maggie Layman and kills from Araiza Acum-Santos and Bridget Gammons. Vanessa Latam ran a crisp offense, dishing out 19 assists on the night and connecting with Gammons, who hit an outstanding .643 with 10 kills on 14 swings. SUNY Poly struggled to find rhythm against the Saints' block, as Adeline Riesenberger and Sofia Velasquez combined for several early stops at the net. A service ace from Latam and a late block sealed the 25-16 decision for the Saints.

The second set featured tighter play early, with the teams trading points through the midway mark. Lily Snide sparked the Saints with a service ace and a back-row kill that ignited a 6-0 run, pushing St. Lawrence ahead 15-9. Latam added consecutive aces to keep momentum rolling, and Riesenberger delivered key kills down the stretch as St. Lawrence pulled away 25-19. The Saints' serve receive unit, led by Cassady Smith's 12 digs, kept the Wildcats from sustaining any long runs.

In the third set, St. Lawrence weathered a brief SUNY Poly surge before locking in behind its senior leaders. Acum-Santos tallied four kills in the frame, while Gammons and Velasquez anchored a strong front line with timely blocks. The Saints' serving continued to make the difference, as Smith and Layman each recorded aces during a late 5-1 stretch that closed out the match. Latam's all-around effort, highlighted by five aces and two solo blocks, capped a balanced and efficient performance for the Saints.

Acum-Santos finished with seven kills and six digs, while Riesenberger posted six kills and two blocks. Velasquez added three kills and four blocks, and Smith's defensive consistency anchored the back row.
