Acum-Santos, Meihaus Set Career-Bests in 3-1 Win Over SUNY Canton

Araiza Acum-Santos had a career-best .512 hitting percentage and a season-high 24 kills, leading the St. Lawrence University volleyball team to their second victory of the season over SUNY Canton, improving to 16-11 with a 3-1 road triumph Friday night at the Roos House in Canton, N.Y.

The 24 kills by Acum-Santos was also historic for the Scarlet and Brown, registering ninth all-time for single-game kills in program history.

The win gives the Saints their highest win total since the 2021 season, when they had 17 victories. They'll have a chance to equal that record in their final game of 2025 against SUNY Potsdam on Saturday.

"I'm very proud of the Saints for their victory tonight," said Saints head coach Shelly Roiger. "Both teams had a tough time slowing down each other's offense but we were able to terminate balls deep in sets to pull out the win. We had multiple players with season high or career high performances tonight with assists or kills and that only happens if our defense and passing gives them something to work with.  I thought we had a lot of players contribute to the win and I'm just very happy for the team as a whole."

The teams traded early points with St. Lawrence holding an early lead. The Saints then used a blocking error and an Adeline Riesenberger kill to expand their lead to four, forcing a Roos timeout with a 9-5 SLU advantage. They would hold a similar lead into the later stages of the set, and a Maggie Layman streak of aces set them up for a set win.

Nine ties and six lead changes highlighted the second set of the match. The Saints led by as many as four early, but the Roos rallied to make things interesting, tying the Saints for the first time at 12-12.

St. Lawrence had a late lead again, forcing a Canton timeout down 24-22. However, Canton had three straight points post timeout to take a 25-24 lead. After a St. Lawrence timeout to break the home team's momentum, they'd tie it out of the timeout on a spike from Riesenberger, then win it 27-25 on back-to-back points.

After an improved hitting percentage in the second set, Canton continued to pour it on in the third, going up 10-4 and forcing Roiger's hand, as the bench boss called an early Saints timeout. Out of the break, the Saints battled back to even the score at 13-13, and the set remained tight into the latter stages. The Roos had six of the last nine points, though, and won the set 25-20.

St. Lawrence went up early in the fourth, but Canton proved to be stingy and would keep the set close, ultimately tying the score 13-13. The score remained tight for most of the fourth until the Saints pulled away late and won the match.

In addition to the marks by Acum-Santos, Rose Meihaus also hit a career high with nine kills in the contest, third-best in Scarlet and Brown. Lily Snide led the team in service aces in the contest, picking up four. Vanessa Latam's 43 assists led the team and were two shy of her season-high.

St. Lawrence now wraps up their 2025 campaign, as they venture down Route 11 to play SUNY Potsdam on Saturday.
