First-year forward
Sam LeDrew scored his first career goal, and senior
Tyler Cristall tallied a goal in the final seconds, but the St. Lawrence University Men's Hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to Canisius on Sunday evening at the LECOM Harborcenter.
The Saints fell to 0-2 on the season, while the Golden Griffins improved to 2-0.
St. Lawrence had some chances to break the scoring early, but it was Canisius and Rhys Chiddenton who opened the scoring midway through the first period to give the Griffins the lead.
The Saints put on a late flurry in the final three minutes, putting eight shots in the direction of Canisius goaltender Chase Clark, but had to settle for a 1-0 score at the break.
The Griffins came out strong in the first period, pouring shots onto
Colin Winn, who was making his first collegiate start. The first-year stood tall but finally relented at the 3:40 mark when Stefano Bottini made it a 2-0 game.
The Scarlet and Brown broke through near the midway point of the second period to make it 2-1.
Isaac Tremblay had the puck in the offensive zone and centered a pass that found LeDrew, who wired a shot over the shoulder of Clark for his first career goal at 12:40.
St. Lawrence had a golden chance early in the third when Crsitall found himself on a breakaway, but his shot was turned aside. The Saints then had a pair of power play chances in the third period, but couldn't convert.
Instead, it was Canisius that extended its lead with a power-play goal from Trey Funk at 8:53 to regain its two-goal edge.
The Saints had another chance on the power play in the waning minutes and pulled Winn for a 6-on-4 advantage. After the power play, the Griffins scored an empty-netter to make it 4-1.
Cristall made it a 4-2 final with 10 seconds left, finishing off a Tremblay setup for his first goal of the season, and Tremblay's second assist of the game.
Winn made 31 saves in his first collegiate action, while Clark stopped 34 shots for Canisius.
St. Lawrence won 57% of the faceoffs and outshot the Griffins 36-35, but went 0-for-2 on the power play while Canisius went 1-for-3.
The Skating Saints return to action next Friday when the team heads to Burlington on Friday, October 10, for a 7:05 p.m. game against the University of Vermont.
