Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Bothwell Tallies Three Points in Men's Soccer's 3-0 Win Over Bard

The St. Lawrence University men's soccer team earned a decisive 3-0 win over Bard College on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field, picking up its second Liberty League victory of the season.

With the win, the Saints improved to 4-6-0 overall and 2-2-0 in conference play, while Bard dropped to 7-4-0 and 0-3-0 in the Liberty League.

"We had to use some depth today to help secure the win and three points against a very well-coached Bard team," said head coach Mike Tishack. "At one point, we had six freshmen on the pitch who did an excellent job. We now look forward to playing at Vassar next weekend."

St. Lawrence struck early and often in the first half, scoring all three goals before the break.

Ryan Campbell opened the scoring in the 23rd minute to take the 1-0 lead. The play started on the wing by Grant Gilmer, who got a shot through that was stopped. The rebound came out to Campbell, who put the ball home for the lead.

Ten minutes later, Nicholas Petrone doubled the advantage with his team-leading fourth goal of the season, assisted by Sammy Bothwell. The first-year, Bothwell carried the ball into the box and, after a quick pivot, centered a pass to Petrone, who beat the keeper.

Bothwell then added a goal of his own in the 38th minute, capping a dominant first-half performance. The forward collected the pass and had the attention of three defenders. Bothwell split all three Raptors and fired a low shot in to take the 3-0 lead.

The Saints had plenty of chances to score in the second half, including a pair of shots off the woodwork, but Jake Sudit held strong for Bard to keep the score 3-0 at the final.

The Saints outshot Bard 22-5, including an 11-2 edge in shots on goal, and held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Zach Amato earned his second clean sheet of the week with his two saves and earned his third career shutout in the win. Bard's goalkeepers Julian Landau and Sudit combined for eight saves, with Sudit stopping six shots in the second half to keep the Saints off the board after halftime.

St. Lawrence returns to action on Saturday, October 11, when the team heads to Vassar for a 2024 Liberty League Championship rematch in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., at 1 p.m.
