The St. Lawrence University men's soccer team couldn't overcome a fast start by Vassar College on Saturday afternoon, falling 2-0 in a Liberty League matchup at Gordon Field in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
The Saints dropped to 4-7-0 overall and 2-3-0 in conference play, while the Brewers improved to 7-3-2 and 3-1-1 in the Liberty League.
Vassar struck twice in the first half to take control of the match. Arden Tobolski opened the scoring in the 16th minute, finishing a pass from Isaac Taegar after maneuvering around the keeper. Tobolski then turned provider in the 35th minute, setting up Jared Fiske for a goal to the left corner that made it 2-0.
St. Lawrence responded with a strong second half, outshooting the Brewers 9-0 after the break and finishing with a 10-8 edge in total shots.
Despite the pressure, the Saints were unable to score and get into the game.
Zach Amato made three saves in net for the Saint, while Vassar's goalkeepers Patrick Gale and Quinn Davidson combined for six saves to preserve the shutout.
Along with out chancing the Brewers 10-8, the Saints led 6-5 in shots on frame, but Vassar led 7-4 in corner kicks.
St. Lawrence will look to bounce back next Wednesday, October 15, when the Saints host Ithaca College at Sandy MacAllaster Field in a 3 p.m. match.
