Ryan Campbell and
Nicholas Petrone broke out offensively with a goal apiece, as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team took their third victory in their last four games with a 2-1 win over Ithaca at Sandy MacAllaster Field on Wednesday.
With the victory, the Saints improve their record to 5-7 overall, with a 3-3 conference mark. Ithaca drops to 6-5-2 with a conference record of 0-4-1.
It was the Saints' first win over Ithaca since October 1, 2022, when they beat the Bombers 1-0 at Sandy.
The Saints had two good chances off the hop, with Petrone and Campbell each getting some offensive looks but Ithaca goalkeeper Bryson Shaull was up to the task and made saves.
However, Petrone and Campbell then teamed up in the 15
th minute, with Petrone springing Campbell on a through ball toward the Ithaca box. Campbell ripped past two defenders and buried the icebreaker to make it 1-0.
Campbell then nearly added a goal of his own in the 26
th, juking around an Ithaca defender in the Bombers' box and chipping a shot off the top woodwork of the Bombers' net.
Ithaca then equalized toward the end of the half when Ikey Borden hit Trevor Barrett with a pass and he beat
Zach Amato to level the score heading to the break.
In the second,
Baker Diaz took a foul in an opportune spot, setting up a well-positioned free kick for Petrone right at the top of the box. He unleashed a strike into the top part of the goal to give the Saints their lead back, and it held until the final buzzer.
The Saints next take on RIT on Saturday, October 18, in the Saints' penultimate home game of the season as they continue through league play.
