Game Recap: Volleyball |

Saints Take Pair of Wins at SUNY Potsdam Triad

The St. Lawrence University volleyball team won six of seven sets over a successful Saturday afternoon at the SUNY Potsdam Triad, where they took two wins over the Bears and Oswego State.

The wins improve their overall record to 12-7, getting them back on track as they head into a crucial weekend of conference play.

"After a rough Friday night match for us, I'm very proud of our team for the character they showed," said Saints head coach Shelly Roiger. "They came out today and defeated a very talented Oswego team and made big plays in big moments late in each set. With little rest time, the team came out and performed well against Potsdam to secure the sweep for the day."

Adeline Riesenberger had 16 kills over two matches, including some well-timed offense during the Potsdam game that helped the Saints to their sweep of the weekend.

Game 1: Oswego State 0, St. Lawrence 3 (28-26, 25-22, 26-24)

Oswego began the first set in the lead until the Saints tied it 7-7, then traded points with the Lakers for the majority of the set. They would take the lead late and went up 24-21 before Oswego battled back to tie the set at 24. An Adeline Riesenberger kill and Lakers attack error sealed the win for the Scarlet and Brown in extra points.

Neither team amassed more than a three point lead in the second set, as the razor-thin margins between these two sides continued deep into set. Oswego seemed to be in the driver's seat after a kill to go up 22-21, but the Saints earned three of the last four points to win the set by three.

Once again, the Saints and Lakers kept a tight margin in the third set. Neither team gave an inch until the match was on the line late. This time, Oswego got up to a set point up 24-24, before a Bridget Gammons kill and Maggie Layman service ace gave St. Lawrence the third set, ending the match.

Latam continued to rack up the aces, adding to her conference-leading mark from the service line by five in this contest. She also led the Saints in assists with 21. Acum-Santos had the lead in kills with eight.

The win was the Saints' first over Oswego State since September 10, 2021, which also was a 3-0 sweep of the Lakers.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 3, SUNY Potsdam 0 (22-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-16)

St. Lawrence used a 5-0 run in the first set to take an early lead, but the Bears took over the latter half of the set and used a well-timed 6-0 run of their own to wrap up the match's opening set and give the triad host's a 1-0 lead.

Spurts of offense were the story of the second set. St. Lawrence had three straight points on four separate occasions in the second set to take a big lead at 17-9. Potsdam made it interesting, however, using a run of their own to score seven of eight points and make the score 25-22. But Gammons and Velasquez had late kills to end the set in the Saints' favor and tie the match.

The teams played a tight third set until the middle stages. With the score at 15-14 Potsdam, the next eight points of the set went to the Scarlet and Brown. Riesenberger had three clutch kills over this period and it made the score 22-15. The Saints ended the set shortly thereafter.

With the match on the line, Potsdam kept the score close early in the third. But with the score at 13-11, the Saints carried the bulk of the offense from then on. They outscored the Bears 12-6, with Gammons, Latam and Kalina Natcheva adding kills as the Saints cruised to a nine-point set win at Potsdam, ending the match.
