Araiza Acum-Santos led the St. Lawrence University women's volleyball team in kills and digs, while
Vanessa Latam had team-highs in blocks and assists, but the Skidmore Thoroughbreds downed the Saints in straight sets Friday evening in Canton, N.Y.
The loss brings the Saints' record to 10-7, with a 1-3 conference mark entering a string of non-conference matches on Saturday.
St. Lawrence started strong in the match's opening set, opening up a 6-2 lead off a
Lily Snide ace and a kill from Acum-Santos. Skidmore used a run shortly thereafter to climb back into the set, and outscored the Saints 23-11 after going down by four to open the set, cruising to a 25-17 set win in the opener.
The second set remained closely contested for the majority of it, with the Thoroughbreds clinging to a 20-17 set advantage. Skidmore earned the last five points of the set, to end the second with the same score as the first.
For the third straight set, St. Lawrence took an early lead at 2-1, only for the Thorougbreds to find their groove offensively. They post five straight points to go up 6-2, then the Saints answered back to tie 6-6. Skidmore then controlled the game again over the next period, going up 15-9 and not relinquishing the lead.
St. Lawrence returns to action versus SUNY Potsdam and Oswego State at the SUNY Potsdam Triad on Saturday.
