Ryan Campbell and
Nicholas Petrone each found the back of the net in the first half, and goalkeeper
Zach Amato posted a clean sheet as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team earned a 2-0 road win over Clarkson on Wednesday night at Hantz Turf Field in Potsdam, N.Y.
The Saints improved to 3-6-0 on the season and 1-2-0 in Liberty League play, while the Knights fell to 5-2-2 and 2-1-0 in league action.
"It was a great result for the team tonight against our local rivals in a very good and well-coached Clarkson team," said head coach
Mike Toshack. "Our team from start to finish was full value for the win. We took our goals well and defended really well. We're really happy for the group, they've had some tough things this year, and they've kept going and have finally been rewarded for all the work they're doing."
The Scarlet and Brown struck first in the 22nd minute when Campbell buried a pass from
Dennis Argueta. The midfielder possessed the ball and battled by a Clarkson defender before sending a perfect through ball to Campbell. The senior fired a low shot past Carter Kladstrup to gain the lead.
Just before halftime, Campbell turned into the provider, assisting on the Petrone tally in the 42
nd minute. Campbell received the ball from
Jeremy Ogango and found the captain, Petrone, on the left side of the 18-yard box. The midfielder blasted a ball past the goalkeeper to double the lead.
St. Lawrence had the better of the chances in the second half of play as well and allowed just two shots to get through, which Amato deftly turned aside to keep the clean sheet.
Amato made two saves in the second half to secure his second shutout of the season. Kladstrup stopped three of the five shots he faced in the loss.
The Saints outshot Clarkson 14-5 and held a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. St. Lawrence also earned seven corner kicks to Clarkson's four.
The Saints will look to build on the momentum as Liberty League play continues this weekend when the team hosts Bard at Sandy MacAllaster Field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
