Three Saints Hit Double Digits in Convincing Win Over Regional Foe Clarkson

Mason Baker-Schlendering, Annie Perry, and Elizabeth Flynn all scored in double figures and the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team routed the Clarkson Golden Knights 58-39 Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium in Potsdam, N.Y.

The Saints earn their second Liberty League win of the season with the road triumph. They are now 2-2 in league play and 7-3 overall.

With the two wins over Clarkson this year, they have now won 10 straight against the Golden Knights.

"We had established some goals for the first half and we accomplished them at halftime, being up 16 on the boards and having low turnovers," said Saints head coach Dan Roiger. "Not surprisingly, that led to an excellent first half.  In the second half we got some good playing experience with different rotations.  It was nice to get a win, with Thanksgiving break and Christmas it had been a while, and it was nice for the players to get rewarded for their continued work in practice. From here on out, it's back to back every weekend, it should be fun!"

Baker-Schlendering had six points in the first five minutes and the Scarlet and Brown were quickly leading 13-3 halfway through the first quarter. Despite failing to score in the last three minutes, the Saints held onto their double digit lead, and were up 17-7 after 10 minutes.

In the early portion of the second quarter, the two teams played each other tightly with the Saints holding a double-digit lead. Then, with St. Lawrence leading 30-19 with under four minutes left, the Saints scored the final nine points of the first half. Caelan McHarney had seven of these and the defense held Clarkson scoreless. The Saints went into the half leading 39-19 with both Flynn and Baker-Schlendering at eight points each.

Both sides were defensive-minded in the third quarter with each team only scoring eight points. Baker-Schlendering and Flynn each had four points for the Scarlet and Brown led 47-27 to start the fourth quarter. The final ten minutes were much of the same, with a low-scoring segment of play. Annie Perry and a pair of threes in the quarter and the Saints cruised to a 58-39 victory.

Flynn and Baker-Schlendering had 12 points apiece and Perry had 11 points in just 19 minutes off the bench. Flynn also tied a season-high with 17 rebounds and Perry led the way with three assists. St. Lawrence outrebounded Clarkson 52-27 for the game, including 21 offensive rebounds that led to 17 second chance points.

The Saints will next be in action at home this weekend where they will host the Vassar Brewers on Friday, January 10 with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
