Jackie Malley topped the scoresheet with 15 points, and the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team kept pace with defending Liberty League champion Vassar, trading leads multiple times but ultimately falling 66-60 on Friday night.
With the loss, the Saints fall to 7-4 overall with a 2-3 mark in the Liberty League.
The preseason favorite Brewers started the game with a 11-6 lead seven minutes in, but the Saints then went on a 9-0 run, with
Annie Perry scoring two points and adding a couple assists as well. This scoring run allowed the Saints to take a 15-14 lead after the first quarter.
After Vassar got the first two points of the second, the Saints went on a 14-4 run, getting up by 29-20 with just over four minutes remaining in the half. However, the Brewers outscored the Saints 11-0 in the next three minutes to pull ahead. St. Lawrence trailed 35-34 at the half with Vassar guard Sierra McDermed carrying the Brewers with 21 points.
A three-pointer by Malley with 4:56 left in the third quarter gave the Saints a 44-41 lead. The two teams exchanged buckets for the rest of the quarter, and Vassar was up 50-48.
Caelan McHarney and
Hannah Van Dyke both made threes in the first two possessions of the fourth quarter for the Scarlet and Brown and the Saints were up 54-52 with 8:50 to go.
The defensive intensity increased after this for the Brewers, and the Saints didn't manage a point for the next eight minutes. Despite this, the Vassar lead was still only at eight, 62-54, heading into the final 50 seconds. The Saints got back-to-back three pointers from Malley and Neisz to end the drought and bring the game within two points with 32 seconds left in the game.
In the final seconds, the Saints were forced to foul and with made free throws and missed shots from the Saints, the Brewers were able to escape with the narrow 66-60 victory.
In addition to Malley's 15, Niesz and McHarney both had nine points for St. Lawrence.
Elizabeth Flynn had five points, a team-leading seven rebounds, and four assists. Perry came off the bench, playing 24 minutes and dishing out a team-high five assists.
The Saints will look to rebound against Bard tomorrow, January 11 in Burkman Gymnasium. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
