Elizabeth Flynn had 17 points but the St. Lawrence women's basketball team dropped their Saturday afternoon contest 79-59 against the hot-shooting Ithaca Bombers in at the Ben Light Gymnasium.
The Saints split the weekend series after beating Union last night, and are now 9-5 overall with a 4-4 Liberty League record.Â
"Ithaca shot the ball well today and we did not, that was 90 per cent of the game," said Saints head coach
Dan Roiger. I thought we competed well despite being on the road with our toughest travel situation of the year. We did a lot of things well except put the ball in the basket."
The first quarter was nearly flawless for the Bombers. Ithaca shot 11-for-16 from the field and made three of their five three point attempts. They were out in front 11-4 halfway through the first quarter and led 25-10 as the quarter concluded.
In the second, the Saints were much improved on both ends of the court and the two teams traded baskets for the quarter. Neither team was able to score more than four straight points with Ithaca's largest lead being 17 and the Saints cutting it to 13 on multiple occasions. Flynn and
Caelan McHarney each had eight points as the Saints headed into the second half facing a 38-24 deficit.Â
To begin the second half, the Scarlet and Brown scored six of the first eight, with a couple of layups by Flynn and the Saints found themselves down just 40-30 three minutes into the third. Although, Ithaca quickly stymied this run and scored the next nine points and just like that were up by 19.
The rest of the third quarter was evenly played and the Bombers held onto a 56-40 lead after three. The Saints once again were unable to get any offensive momentum created in the final 10 minutes, as the Bombers had an answer for every St. Lawrence basket. The Saints never got closer than 15 in the fourth quarter and ultimately fell by 20 after Ithaca increased their lead late after some offense from their subs.Â
Flynn had five rebounds to go along with her team high 17 points and McHarney was second on the team with 12 points and led the Saints in both rebounds and assists with seven and two respectively. The Bombers shot 52 per cent from the floor in the game and had 18 assists as well.Â
The Saints will look to rebound next Friday, January 24 in Geneva, N.Y. where they will match up against the William Smith Herons.Â
