McHarney Collects Career-High in Saints' Blowout Win Over William Smith

Caelan McHarney scored a career-high 16 points in just 19 minutes and the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team had a strong defensive performance to beat the William Smith Herons 64-46 Friday night in Geneva, N.Y. 

The Saints get their 10th win of the season, improving to 10-5 overall with a 5-4 Liberty League record, putting them at sixth place in the league. 

"Nice game for us tonight," said Saints head coach Dan Roiger. It was a good defensive effort on their top players by numerous Saints.Great game offensively by Caelan and numerous contributions throughout the lineup."

The Saints' offense was strong in the first half and although they never got more than a five-point lead, William Smith's only lead of the game came on the first scoring play.

With the score tied at 15 with under a minute in the quarter, Annie Perry hit one from beyond the arc and Elizabeth Flynn scored to give the Saints a 20-15 lead. The two teams traded points for the beginning of the second quarter that only saw St. Lawrence and William Smith notch seven points each in the first six minutes.

With the score at 26-22 in favor of the Saints with four minutes left, Norah Niesz had two free throws, Hannah Van Dyke drained a three, and the Saints defense didn't allow the Herons to score the rest of the half. The Saints entered the locker room with their largest lead of the game, 31-22. 

William Smith started the second half scoring the first six and getting the game to just one possession, but the Saints were able to get back out in front 38-30 with just under six minutes remaining in the quarter. The Saints then scored six of the next eight with Flynn having four of these points and the Scarlet and Brown got their lead to a dozen 44-32. The Saints ended the third quarter up 48-35.

Midway through the fourth quarter, the Saints ran away with it after an 11-1 run which consisted of five different scorers leading to a 61-40 lead. They cruised to the win from there. 

Flynn had 12 points and 11 rebounds to record her seventh double-double of the season and Mason Baker-Schlendering scored eight points and had nine boards. The Saints held the Herons to just 2-17 from the three point line and forced 19 turnovers. 

The Saints will head west to play the RIT Tigers, tomorrow at 2 p.m.
